The team lost to Stansbury 19-0 on Thursday, May 2, at Park City High School, and 18-3 on Friday, May 3, in Stansbury, making the Miners the fourth seed in Region 11. The Miners now head to Cedar City on Saturday to play Cedar High School, the top team in Region 9. “We didn’t play as well against Stansbury as we wanted, but I told the girls if that’s when we have two bad games, let it be then,” coach Shannon Gebbia said. Gebbia said the team wasn’t focused during their first game against Stansbury, and simply didn’t hit well in their second game. “I’m hoping that if that’s the time we go cold, we can pick it back up and get ready for Cedar City,” she said. The team will miss the Park City High School prom by going to the game, so junior utility player Landon Albright asked the whole team to be her “date,” Gebbia said. Gebbia said the gesture was “adorable” and “huge” for morale. The Miners will play the first round of state playoffs against Cedar at noon in Cedar City on Saturday. Miners boys soccer The Park City High School boys soccer team’s season came to an end on Saturday, May 4, when the Miners lost to Mountain Crest 2-1 in the state Class 4A quarterfinals. Coach Tom Merchant said the game was similar to many the team had played this season, in that it was bitterly close. “It’s the kind of battle we’ve been in all year,” he said. The team finished the season 9-6-2 overall and brought home the Region 11 championship. Of the 17 total games the team played this season, 12 were either tied or settled by a single goal. Senior striker Cameron Chevre scored the Miners’ lone goal against Mountain Crest 10 minutes into the game. “The (Mountain Crest) keeper made a poor choice in distributing the ball,” Merchant said. “Cameron stole it and stuck it right back in the net. It was a nice individual effort.” Mountain Crest equalized on a free kick during extra time at the end of the first half, then scored again 10 minutes into the second half to secure the game. “It’s always disappointing to end on a loss in the quarterfinals, but it’s gratifying looking back and seeing all the growth and relationships we’ve gained,” Merchant said. Chevre is one of 10 Miners who are graduating this year, along with Dylan Ehman, Jacob Farnsworth, Johnny Flitton, Forrest Kunz, Aidin O’Brien, Cameron Peterson, Jared Roscoe, Thomas Sprung and Cameron Stevens. “John, Jacob and Forrest have been on varsity all four years of their careers, and it’s been a great relationship and we will be sad to see them go,” Merchant said. “However, the group following is so strong, although we miss (this year’s seniors), we really don’t miss a step going forward.” L N s UTAH OLYMPIC PARK The Utah Olympic Park’s ropes courses and drop tower are open Fridays through Sundays, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The park will start Rosie Brennan nominated for U.S. cross-country ski team summer programming on May 27. The Parkite was cut from the team before last season after a poor 2017-2018 season, the result of what she suspects to be an undiagnosed case of mononucleosis. This past season she competed on the World Cup circuit as an independent racer, funding herself and hiring most of her own support staff. Brennan was also given the Inga Award by a group of current and former female U.S. Olympic cross-country athletes for the grit she showed during the 2017-2018 season, and the resilience she showed in coming back to her best-yet season in 2018-2019. “I am happy and proud to have my accomplishments from this past season recognized and to therefore have some funding for the coming season,” Brennan said. “But I also know that I can prepare myself best on my own terms, so I will be challenged with the balancing act of meeting the requirements of national team athletes while continuing to do what makes me best prepared for international competition.” Brennan said she will continue to work with her club coach to manage her energy and make the best decisions within the bounds of the U.S. team.
