DEER VALLEY RESORT Ripped liners cause resort to skip spring celebration F v r BEN RAMSEY B The Park Record T Park City Mountain Resort’s season ended without its traditional flair. On Saturday, the day before the end of PCMR’s ski season, the resort canceled the 23rd annual edition of its Pond Skimming Competition, due to an equipment malfunction. The resort reported that two of three plastic liners that contain the pool that skiers and snowboarders jump into or attempt to cross in costume were ripped. “Our mountain operations team has been working hard all morning to find a solution to fill the pond with the remaining liner, but unfortunately the pond will not hold enough water to conduct the pond skim,” the resort tweeted at 10:57 a.m. Saturday. That explanation, however, didn’t hold water with some skiers, several of whom expressed their displeasure on Twitter. PCMR representatives de- Deer Valley Resort closed Sunday, April 7. The pond skim is near to the hearts of skiers who often invest in costumes and plan a day around the event, traditionally the penultimate day of PCMR’s ski season and a staple of resorts around North America. “Obviously, this is a major disappointment to our participants and to our team, and we sincerely apologize to the contestants and our guests for canceling this year’s event,” Park City Mountain’s Twitter account read following the cancellation. LEAH VANN Steamboat Pilot & Today UINTA-WASATCH-CACHE NATIONAL FOREST STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, Colo. – Steamboat Springs 2014 Olympic snowboarder Taylor Gold has a long list of tricks typed up on his phone. Three years of being injured gave the Breckenridge resident a lot of time to sit on the couch and watch other snowboarders, taking note of new tricks and how he wanted to make them his own. “He is a snowboard nerd. He studies at it, looks at videos of tricks that he likes,” U.S. Snowboarding halfpipe coach Rick Bower said. “He studies everything about the motion, the movements of the trick, and he’s got the snowboard riding The Heber-Kamas Ranger District maintains trails and campgrounds in the Uinta Mountains east of Kamas. The skills to be able to do it.” Gold’s future has been in question for a while, but he’s remained on the U.S. team’s roster because coaches know that no one else has the same effortless flare riding the halfpipe. It’s a unique style that scores well with the judges. “He is one of the most talented riders you’ve ever had as far as snowboarding skills,” Bower said. “It was a year after Sochi when he got injured. The sport has progressed a lot in that time, and he’s had minimal opportunity to step up to the level of tricks people are doing right now.” Hopes shattered Gold shattered his kneecap on a rock in Silverton in January 2016. Since then, he’s occasionally returned to snow but never for a full season. Following his first surgery, Gold returned to the snow to take home a bronze medal at the 2017 Winter X Games but nev- er felt like it was fully healed. He underwent a scope surgery to remove the scar tissue that spring. In the meantime, Gold decided to fix his shoulder, which was frequently dislocated. He tried to return in fall 2017 during a camp in Switzerland, and the result led to a devastating conclusion. “I was struggling so much just to go up there and ride,” Gold said. “The pipe was still really painful, and at that point, I had no idea what to do. I didn’t think I could ride as hard as I wanted to or needed to to make the (Olympic) team.” Instead of making a run for his second Olympic team, Gold concluded that he needed more time to recover. “That moment was really bittersweet, actually,” Gold said. “I was so stressed out about not being able to ride the way I wanted to. I could have maybe pushed through it.
