FOR Supreme Court declines to hear Utah GOP’s challenge Associated Press SALT LAKE CITY – The U.S. Supreme Court is declining to hear the Utah Republican Party’s challenge to a state law overhauling how political parties nominate candidates. The Monday decision halts the long court battle over the law allowing candidates to bypass GOP nominating conventions and instead gather signatures to participate in a primary. Utah’s GOP argued the 2014 law violated their Frist Amendment right to choose candidates as they saw fit. But the U.S. 10th Circuit Court of Appeals disagreed, finding it balances the state’s interest in managing elections while allowing political parties and residents a way to express their political choices. Opponents of the law could now turn to the Legislature. Republican Sen. Dan McCay considered sponsoring a proposal to change the law this year, but decided to wait until the court battle was done. Police say 55-year-old Carla Orsini remained hospitalized Sunday while her daughter, 31-year-old Jayde Lauren Alte- meier, was booked on charges including attempted murder. According to a police affidavit, Altemeier stabbed her mother inside an extended-stay hotel room on Saturday. She then fled the scene before police arrived. But she later walked into an Olive Garden restaurant and admitted to the attack. Police say Orsini told them that Altemeier had previously said she was suicidal and homicidal. Matthew Morrise, an attorney who has represented Altemeier in other cases, says he did not yet have information about this case. He says Altemeier has a history of mental health issues, including time at a state hospital. Falling boulder kills hiker Associated Press TOOELE COUNTY – Authorities say a hiker has been killed after a large boulder rolled onto her at Utah’s Stansbury Island. Tooele County Sheriff’s officials say the body of the 37-yearold victim was recovered Satur- day night. They say she was from the Salt Lake area but her name is being withheld until her family can be notified. Sheriff’s officials say the woman was with her husband and friend when the accident occurred about 3 p.m. Saturday about a mile from the trailhead. She reportedly was hiking down a trail and was on the boulder when it moved and trapped her. Sheriff’s officials say the woman then fell forward and the boulder somehow rolled on top of her. They say slick conditions made the steep terrain more dangerous at the time of the accident. Wild turkeys rounded up Associated Press Penthouse Living Raise the Art of Après in a Penthouse that’s the Envy of Park City MENDON – Utah state wildlife officials have corralled more than 500 wild turkeys this winter in Cache County that are a nuisance to homeowners. They were moved to a rural area known as the Book Cliffs near Vernal. Drawn by food they can find near homes, the wild turkeys come into the small northern Utah town of Mendon outside of Logan by the hundreds, said Randall McBride, depredation specialist with the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources. They leave waste and sometimes destroy property, KSL-TV reports. “They’ve become a nuisance during the winter,” McBride said. “They get together in big flocks, and then people tend to not like defecating on their lawns or destroying their landscape.” He said the city of Mendon set aside grazing areas near town several years ago in hopes of keeping the turkeys out of town but it didn’t work. McBride urged homeowners not to leave out any pet food that the wild turkeys like to eat. “Food availability is really what’s bringing them in,” McBride said. On a recent day, wildlife offi- cials corralled about a 12 turkeys in two traps in the area. It is one of about six places that wildlife officials stop at regularly during the winter. Some of the wild turkeys who are caught are given GPS backpacks so scientists can track their behavior and hopefully better manage the herds. Most of them are moved to a rural area in the Book Cliffs near Vernal where a large flock lives. “We’re just trying to better understand the turkeys in general,” McBride said. “Especially in this area so we can better manage them, so, hopefully, they’ll become less of a problem.” ENLIGHTEN WELLNESS OFFERS Après at home—your penthouse is Park City’s most stylish place to bring friends.
