Show A4 The Emery County Review, Tuesday, June 3, 2008 Huntington Airport receives grant for new hangars Josie Luke With a $400,000 grant committed from the Utah Permanent Community Impact Board and another $400,000 from the Emery County Municipal Building Authority, the Huntington Airport now has funding to pursue the building of new airport hangars. The replacement of the old hangars was part of the plan de- veloped for the airport in 2005, because the old hangars were located within the 400 feet of space required around the runway. After working for a year and a half on preparing the grant and then applying last November, the grant from the CIB was finally awarded to Emery County on May 8. County Commissioner Gary Kofford has been working on the airport and is pleased with the prospect of the new hangars. He said the design they are considering would hold one larger plane and four smaller planes and, in the future, as funds become available, would allow for additions to be made. Huntington Aviation LLC owner Leon Defriez, who is currently leasing the airport from the county, sees the new hangars as a huge addition to the airport. He said that one of the benefits of having new hangars is that it will offer upgraded hangars for the planes already located at the airport, along with space for a couple of new planes. Defriez also sees the addition as a way of drawing businesses to the site. “Getting the new hangars will benefit the county and also help us get some growth,” he said. He explained that there is already a crop spraying business that has expressed a desire to relocate to the airport when space is available. Commissioner Kofford related that there are several decisions that need to be made and steps to be taken before the new hangars will become a reality, but is encouraged AmeriCorps teams return to Green River to offer service AmeriCorps* NCCC is in Green River again. This year among the many services that they provide to the community, they will be helping with the Commu- nity Center/Boys and Girls Club Summer Camp, School of Rock, where they will mentor youth, help with educational programs, service and sports activities. These young people give a year of their lives to help others. One group arrived in Green River on May 16 and they will be in the area helping until July 17 when they will return to their homes and families. Some of them will go on to jobs, some to school while some will sign up for another year of service with AmeriCorps*.
