That country has decided to eliminate from coinage all 60 pfennig, one, two and three mark pieces. Germany had some 10,600,000 ounces of sUrer arallable for open market' dlspoeltion at recent high prices. Sale of at least a portion of this amount has been a factor In bringing about the severe drop in BilTer price. The persistent tall In sllrer in the London market la accompanied by rumors of financial difficulties In the far east Chinese exchange has been notably weak the past few days, the Shanghai rate declining I cents, to 06. t There was. considerable buying of sUrer contracts for Chinese account three weeks ago, this anticipating heavy buying In the United' States mint when the price fell from Its recent high level to 91 an ounce. Apparently there has been some misunderstanding on the other side of tha provisions of tha Pittman act; the far east does not reallie that the American mint is allowed to purchase at 1 an ounce only silver which Is the product of the United States mines and of reduction plants located In. this country. The utilities commission of Utah Friday took the position that It Is probably not a good policy to have all the stage lines leaving any city under the , same ownership. Buck a situation, the commission held, might lead to conditions bordering on monopoly. The commission following out this policy, granted the application of Bert Lockhart to operate a dally automobile stage line between Eureka and Payson, leaving Parson at 8 o'clock In the morning and Eureka at 8 oclock In the evening. The fare one way will be 88.00 and the round trip 88.60, It Is said that the schedule will make It possible to go from Balt Lake to Eureka and return in one day, spending from 10 o'clock In the morning to 8 oclock In the evening In the mining town. The present Rio. Grande train service makes necessary an overnight stop In the mining camp, according to the report of the commission. About S50 people along the line will be served by the new schedule, the report says. , The commission, at the same time denied the application of Klrkendall Brothers to operate a stage line over the same route. Klrkendall Brothers already operate between Eureka and Mammoth. FEDERAL TAX REVISION. While .the press and the people are struggling over the details of the great national political campaign, business men are working on a plan of federal taxation that shall displace the present inadequate, system. A committee of seventeen gentlemen who are heads of large mercantile and manufacturing organisations, and representative of the nations best Interests, has charge of the proposed changes. Surely these American leaders can have no Interest In business conditions that are going to work a grtat hardship on anyone and Congress and the people who are really the power back of Congreas can wall listen. These men believe that the excess profits tax and the high surtax are business killers, driving Investors away from productive Industry and into making all their investments In tax exempt securities. of They propose a the present high and direct burden on business, some plan to set business free, to Increase production and to reduce prices, that are now artificially raised by shtihtlng taxes. Taxing undistributed surplus endividends, extravagant courages stops the cxpanlaon of' Industrial plants and Increased production, and will eventually lead our country into an era of national insolvency. Under consequent business depression the present excess profit tax, high surtax and luxury taxes will not produce revenues, and the government cannot rely on them as a permanent peace time policy. The next session of Congress will be compelled to take np the problem of a revision of federal taxation from the standpoint of placing a premium upon Industrial production rather then penalising Initiative. end what feeling of Independence Is greater than that of owning your own home. Something like a ton and a half of Ice Is being used each week In providing Ice water for the men who are employed is the underground workings of the Tlntle Standard mine. The lower levels of the Standard, from which the mines shipments of ore are coming, are unusually hot and water taken Into the mine by employees soon becomes warm. In order to provide better drinking water tha officers of the company have Installed water tanks at convenient places, keeping the water cool by the use of Ice, which Is purchased from John Churchs Ice company of Eureka. It Is a tense, human and infinitely appealing story of a woman confronted with one of lifes greatest dilemmas. Meta Maxon, daughter of hardy, somewhat grasping parents, never, until circumstances led her out Into the world of wealth, knowing the ways of men, came to a point In her Ufa when she herself must make a great decision. She found In the young, idealistic artist living In the little New England town In order to sketch the rugged grandeur of the coast and sea, the real romance of her life. Yet there was something Meta felt Albert should know. She was well aware he himself for he had confessed It had not led a life entirely blameless. But she was no less aware that men regard a womans mistake and their own as unpardonable, Joyous escapades. To tell him would mean to lose him. To keep her secret would mean a life of uneasy happiness, unutterably miserable.
