Show A10 • WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 16, 2009 Sentinel Guardian of Your Community N Volleyball battle of the Eagles James Hardman STAFF WRITER Two birds of prey battled it out in an intense volleyball match, on Tuesday, Sept. 8,2009 as the American Leadership Academy's Eagles faced the Maple Mountain Golden Eagles. After a long struggle, the Golden Eagles took the match with a 3-2 win over ALA. As the match began, ALA quickly took the lead with an 18-25 win over MMHS, but Maple Mountain rebounded to take a close second game 27-25. The third game, even closer, was tied for half of the game. Neck and neck they flew, with Maple Mountain's Kylee Bendtschneider keeping the score tied with kill after kill in response to ALAs attack.. "We as a team voted Kylee Bendtschneider as the player of the game, she had the most kills, and played really well," said MMHS Coach Amber Hall. Despite Maple Mountain's efforts in the third game, ALA's defense was able to keep the Golden Eagles down, giving the Eagle offense time to win the third game, 8-15. "ALA has a flawless defense," coach Hall said. "They were really good." Behind two games to one, Maple Mountain pulled together as a team and the Golden Eagles came out victorious in the last two games. The fifth game's final score of 15-8 finished the match. "Our team is really young, and these girls have all played at different schools. They still weren't quite used to playing as a team yet," said Coach Hall. "It was a slow match until after the third game, then we really pulled together as a team." Hall praised her team for pulling together so well. She said that if her team hadn't rallied, ALA would have taken.the victory. "You can never complain about a win," she said. "ALA really has a flawless defense, and they were a really good team. It was an especially good game." Keri Huntsman / The Sentinel BALL HANDLING: Spanish Fork's Erin Redd puts the ball over the net for the Lady Dons. ALA loses close match to Wasatch Alexis Richardson STAFF W R I T E R The ALA Eagles played their first region volleyball game Thursday, Sept. 10, at ALA against Wasatch High. The Eagles lost in a three set match, but kept up their energy the whole game. The Eagles were confident as they started the game, but within the first couple minutes Wasatch scored two ace services. Annika Crockett scored ALAs first point in the first few minutes of the game. The Eagles stayed within 2-5 points behind Wasatch the whole first set. In the second set the Eagles picked up the pace as they tried to fill in some of the holes in their defense. They stayed closer to Wasatch, read the ball better and started working better as a team, even though the Wasps came out on top, 25-22. In the third set the Eagles played hard and took the intensity up another notch. They lead Wasatch for the first 15 points. The two teams stayed close in points for most of the set .until Wasatch pulled ahead by four points. The Eagles regained three points and started gaining momentum when Wasatch scored the winning point, ending that set and the match with the Eagles two points behind. Both Coach Carvalho and Coach Moai mentioned that this game was a tough loss for the Eagles, because they were so close the whole time. "This was a tough loss for us because it was such a close game" said Coach Ashley Moai. "A couple plays difference and we could have won." She continued to say that the girls need more experience together as a team to become more familiar with each other and the game. She has confidence they will improve as the season goes on.
