Show - ••-. f'1 T- SPANISH FORK • WEDNESDAY, MARCH 25, 2009 • A3 Covering what matters most Welcoming spring in Benjamin Ranch potatoes 'Round and About Benjamin Kathleen Olsen Yea! It's officially spring - even the calendar says so although possible snow is predicted by the time you read this. But, nevertheless, -it ispushing its way in - the fields are no longer idle from the winter's rest, tractors are busy working the ground or planting, birds are all over the place pulling up old grass or other nest worthy materials, the pussy willow bush is covered with its furry little fellows, and it just feels springy. Enjoy it because we all know it can all change in about fifteen minutes. ••• The 157th anniversary of the origin of Relief Society has been well celebrated in Benjamin. On Tuesday, March 17, Benjamin 2nd Ward Relief Society members with the Ward's Young Women as guests, enjoyea a lovely evening with the theme, 'Come, Travel Through Time." Stephanie Gait, enrichment leader, was in charge of the evening which included a program emphasizing the theme. Those who participated in the program included Bernice Woffinden, Karma Woffinden, Elaine Anderson, Christine Johnson, and Karen Williams. Kathy Jensen presented songs through the program and Cynthia McKee played songs on the piano. Shirley Diamond and her committee prepared the supper with the Young Women providing the dessert. The decorations were daisies (to depict spring) and clocks (to go along with the theme). The Relief Society presidency includes Phyllis Brock, president, Pat Ivy and Maren Chandler, counselors, and Christine Stubbs, secretary. ••• The following evening, Wednesday, March 18, Benjamin 1st Ward celebrated the anniversary with the theme, "My Sisters Hands." Relief Society members and their husbands or other guests gathered for supper and a special program. The cultural hall of the church was decorated with spring flowers and ceramic hands depicting the theme of the evening. Supper was served followed by a short talk about hands and the different service done by them given by Shirley Shepherd. A beautiful DVD was presented showing the hands of a number of sisters of the ward doing service. Just who belonged to the various hands was not revealed as they represented the many sisters of the ward who are constantly giving service. A copy of the DVD was presented to each sister. Ken Peay operated the machinery making the presentation possible. Those who worked on the committee putting all of this, including the meal, together included LuAnn Wride, enrichment chairman, Cecile Peay, Tammy Peay, Vema Rohbock, Debra Shell, Sharry Hansen, Rowene Hawkins, Kathy Nielson, Janet Reynolds, and Kim Reynolds. The Benjamin 1st Ward Relief Society presidency includes Shirley Shepherd, president, Phyllis King and Carolynn Burningham, counselors, and Susan Beckstrom, secretary. Congratulations to Chance Wride who married Winter Heims in the Oakland Temple on Thursday, March 12, 2009. The couple was honored at a reception the following evening, Friday, March 13,2009, in Reno, Nevada and at an Open House held in Orem on Saturday, March 2. Verla reports they saw many beautiful sights in the area and also enjoyed shopping and other enjoyable activities. The Mortensons will be assigned in Puerto Rico for about three and a half more years. ••• The next 4-H Livestock meeting will take place on Thursday, April 9,2009, and the livestock show, itself, is scheduled for Saturday, April 25, 2009, at Brown's arena in north Pavson. Canine caper: From GEEZER • A2 the State, I propose obesity laws for people. Dogs are on their own. This is not a new idea of course. Governor Patterson of New Jersey raised taxes on soda to discourage high sugar consumption and Mayor Bloomberg of New York City just created over a hundred new taxes on the long-suffering citizens of the Big Apple that promise to burden you 24/7. But my plan is the real deal. This would be change you can believe in. Visualize this: The little woman becomes concerned when hubby doesn't come home for lunch as expected and she gives his employer a ring.. "Hello, this is Mrs. Warner. My husband, Derek, didn't come home for lunch today and I'm calling to see if everything is all right." "We were just going to call you Mrs. Warner," the office manager says solemnly, "I'm afraid we have bad news. The Corpulence Cops raided the plant today and took Derek away in hand cuffs." "Oh no!" Allison screams. "Derek made a valiant escape attempt in thefieldbehind the plant, but the hounds quickly tracked him down. He had climbed a willow tree but his weight bent the tree over so he was only inches off the ground when they apprehended him." "This is dreadful! I was doing my best to bring his weight down. I fed him only celery sticks and rice cakes sprinkled with a little Cinnamon. But it didn't seem to be working." "Sadly, Mrs. Warner, your husband was living out of the snack machine here at the plant. The CC men who took him into custody confiscated half a dozen Snickers bars, two bags of Cheetos and a package of Jolly Rancher hard candies. They also hauled away our machine for evidence." "I* suspected he was cheating but Allison sobs. "There, there Mrs, Warner it's going to be all right. The CC supervisor in charge told me that your husband was only facing three months of solitary dieting before he's allowed visitors. And within six months he could be getting weekend furloughs. I'm sure the State knows what's best for Derek and the family." "I suppose you're right," Allison sighs in resignation. The good part is, my plan could be implemented for a hundred billion or so or maybe two or three trillion but the cost is unimportant. We're talking about what's good for the State here. Email the Geez at ipi 1940@msn .com There and Back Again Shirlene R. Otlesen Your chuckle for the week: "Bill: Where are you going on your vacation?" Bob: "Yellowstone National Park." Bill: "Don't forget Old Faithful." Bob: "Oh, I won't. She's going with me." Well, I guess I can finally put the ice melt away for another season. I've had a bucket full of ice melt on my back porch so it would be handy. It's good stuff. We have used lots of it during this past winter. With melting snow running off the roofs, of sheds, the calving barn, house, etc. we had to watch where we were walking or we soon found ourselves on the ground. I made a good three-point landing one morning when I slipped on the ice that had accumulated on the north side of our shop. I was on my back looking up at the roof of the shop. It's a good thing I have a hard head because I heard my head hit the cement floor. The first thing I did was to look around to see if anyone was watching! Anyway, it's good to have some warmer temperatures, a bright blue sky and the mountains still covered with beautiful snow that will provide for us an ample water supply. As life just keeps getting busier and busier it seems that we keep looking for ways to do things faster and faster. The experts keep telling us that it is very beneficial for families to have at least one meal together a day. That takes a bit of doing and planning. I tried a new recipe the other day that we liked and maybe you will too. It's a potato recipe. You can ask any member of my family and they will tell you that we eat a lot of potatoes! That's the way it was when I was growing up and it's still a good way to plan a meal. Ranch Potato Cubes: 7 medium potatoes cut into 1/2 in. cubes; 1/4 cup butter, cubed; 1 cup sour cream; 1 envelope ranch salad dressing mix; 1 cupshredded cheddar cheese. Place the potatoes in a greased 11x7 baking dish; dot with butter. Cover and bake at 325° for 60-65 minutes or until tender. Combine the sour cream and salad dressing mix; spoon over the potatoes. Sprinkle with the cheese. Bake uncovered for 5-10 minutes or until the cheese is melted Now, if you can't spend that much time baking the potatoes, here is what I did. I always keep a few potatoes cooked in the fridge. Just cook them with the skins on. Then when you're ready to make this recipe, just slip the skins, cut up and continue with the recipe and heat in the oven until heated all the way through. Serves eight. Enjoy.
