Congratulations to Stephanie, Jared, Vicki, and Spencer for representing their team and their school in an outstanding manner! Crystal Apple awarded to Doreen Snyder "I have the best job in the world!" said Mrs. Doreen Snyder, recipient of the "Crystal Apple Award". Doreen has been a Special Education teacher for nineteen years. At Rees Elementary on February 10, 2009, Craig Harvey from Horrace Mann presented this award to Doreen for her excellence in teaching. Mrs. Laura Elzinga and Mr. Jeff Ballard said there were many good things that could be said about Doreen. She does have very special talents and is always sharing her talents with many others. Some words from her classroom aides were, "Children with very spe- cial needs need a teacher with very special talents'*. Doreen claims that this success comes from the support of a great principal, school, and team. "You will never meet a more dedicated teacher who loves the kids," stated Mrs. Erin Shim. "Her dedication and love for teaching shows in the lives of her students." After learning about the history and culture, each student chose a Greek god or hero to write a report and complete an art project on. As a culminating event the sixth-grade had an entire culture day in which students wore costumes for the days festivities. Each class performed two plays including Pandora's Box, Atlanta and the Great Race, The God's and Goddess's Bake Off, Athena and Arachne: How spiders came to be, The Trojan War, and The Midas Touch. They made ambrosia (the food of the gods), painted pottery, learned how to use roman numerals, and had a mini-Olympic Games Event. Parent volunteers ran game rotations where students competed for gold, silver, and bronze medals in eight events including shot-put, discus, hammer throw, javelin, 100-inch race, pop-a-bag race, cracker race, and a standing stretch. It was a great learning experience and everyone learned a lot while having fun doing it! Brockbank Elementary is excited to have some new reporters at our school helping to get the news out. They are fifth-graders from Mrs. Cynthia Loreen's class. It is a great learning experience for these students and it will be fun to read their articles. They were taught the functions of the post office, met special community friends who serve the public there, and were able to mail letters. Each little one left with a smile.
