Seven are featured here and the other six will be featured next week. Interviews by Lindsay B. Wolsey, Marilyn Nielson, Christene Choate andAlexa Johnson Kimberly Mullins Family and Consumer Sciences Kimberly Mullins is the Sterling Scholar for Family and Consumer Sciences, She is. the daughter of Denise and Timothy Mullins and the oldest of five kids. She was born and raised in Provo until the age of 15, when she moved here. Mullins has received many honors throughout her school career. She won the MATC Interior Design contest as a junior. She is the Vice President of the National Honors Society. She won the service award for the National Honors Society as a junior, and was also nominated to attend a math conference at BYU. Mullins has always Ipved to sew. "I'm an avid sewer and have drafted several patterns and designed several pieces of clothing," she said. Mullins has taken five consecutive sewing classes and has received awards showing her expertise in interior design. "I've always had a passion for interior design so I thought I could do really well in (this) area," said had extensive experience with computers through his work at Castle wave LLC, where he has been an asset manager who talks to engineers in India and helps them with the' company's website design. Christiansen also works on SEO, or Search Engine Optimization, which he describes as "helping find ways to drive the company to the top of various search engines such as Google and Yahoo." Besides his interest in computers, Christiansen also loves music. "I play the trumpet and the piano, and I'm also a drum major for the Spanish Fork Marching Band," he said. He also loves to travel. "One of my most memorable trips was going to Nepal to do high-altitude trekking with my family," said Christiansen. He is one of the only people under the age of sixteen to do trekking above 18,000 feet in altitude. Christy Hardy Foreign Language Spanish Fork High School's Sterling Scholar for Foreign Language this year is Christy Hardy, daughter of Jon and Julie Hardy of Spanish Fork. Hardy has grown up in Spanish Fork her whole life and enjoys drawing and reading. She is also accomplished in karate and will be testing for her black belt in April. Mullins. "I wouldn't say that I have a lot of natural talent," Byrnes said. "I just work hard." •The effort she puts forth is easy to see. Byrnes is an officer in the National Honors Society, and has played the cello in the Utah Valley Youth Symphony Orchestra for the last six years. She intends to attend Brigham Young University and major in English. Dominic Bills Speech and Drama Dominic Bills, the son of Dale and Rita Bills, is the Sterling Scholar for Speech and Drama at Spanish Fork High School. Bills has many qualifications in this area. He is the Masque Club President for the 08-09 year, Thespian Troupe 943 President, was Masque Club Vice President over publicity in 07-08 and a is member of the International Thespian Society. Bills has also been involved in 10 plays at Spanish Fork High School, with leading roles in seven of the 10. Awards he has received include, student of the month, a double letter in drama and Honor Thespian. Speech and drama have always been important to' Bills. "Sterling Scholar has always been important to me just so I could represent my school in this area to which I have dedicated most of my time since the ninth grade. I wanted the recognition for being outstanding in the subject I am so passionate about," said Bills. Bills is still unsure of which school he will be attending after high school, but he plans to double major in acting and theatre education and then obtain a masters degree in directing and eventually direct professional plays or teach drama. Sonnett Davies Math For as long as Sonnett Davies can remember, she John Christiansen Christy Hardy Mallory Byrnes Dominic Bills Sonnett Davies Sharisa Nay has lived in Spanish Fork with her parents, Ron and Karin Davies. Davies is the Math Sterling Scholar at Spanish Fork High. When asked the secret of her success in math, Davies replied that she loves it. "I've taken AP Calculus, and I learned to enjoy it, not dread it," Davies said. Davies has considered pursuing a career in the math and science field, but is planning to major in nursing. Davies intends to study at Southern Utah University, and would like to become either a pediatric nurse or a nurse practitioner. "I had considered becoming a pharmacist, but there isn't enough interaction with people," she said. Davies is a busy high school senior, involved with Ambassadors, National Honors Society and Spanish Club. She is also finishing her studies for her Certified Nursing Assistant certification through Mountainland Applied Technology College. Washington, DC after winning an essay contest. She helped raise money and assemble 100 school kits for children in Iraq. Nay is president of the German Club, an officer in the National Honors Society, and is a member of Key Club and Future Business Leaders of America. Additionally, she is vice-president of the high school band and plays theflute.She intends to attend Brigham Young University for her undergraduate education, and would like to pursue her graduate degree back East. "I'm planning to major in chemical engineering," Nay said, "but that will probably change." Sharisa Nay Social Sciences Sharisa Nay is the Social Sciences Sterling Scholar for SFHS. She moved to Spanish Fork when she was three years old and is the daughter of Donald and Kari Nay. Nay has been interested in government for several years, and is currently enrolled in Advanced Placement Government at Spanish Fork High School. Nay has been involved in Girls State, and has traveled to Kiera Davit Salem Elementary j Kiera Davis is a second-grade :'• student at Salem Elementary. She is the daughter of Vickie . and. Kurt Davis. Her teachers are Mrs. James and Mrs. Thatcher. Kiera enjoys drawing and practicing spelling words. Outside of school, she likes to play tag with her friends. \. Jailee is a member of the Drill Team and FFA. Her favorite classes include history, geometry and Spanish. Outside of school she likes to ride horses, hang out with friends and dance. On a road trip she would visit historic war sites back east and would listen to country. SCIENCE LESSON: Mrs. Klein, a representative from Discovery Gateway, recently visited the fifthgrade students af Brockbank Elementary. The students enjoyed a fun science lesson on chemical and physical changes. After a demonstration the students were then able to conduct their own chemical reactions.
