Lady Dons take on Lone Peak Bryan Redd j STAFF WRITER The Lady Dons welcomed Lone Peak last Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2008 and entertained the home crowd with an excellent match, played by two top quality teams in the toughest volleyball region in the state. The Dons fought hard and showed improvement against the storied Lone Peak spikers. The Dons jumped out to an early 8-4 lead before the Knights stormed back to tie the game at 13-13. Both teams struggled with serving early in the match. SF relied on great team offense with eight kills and hustle defense with four blocks and three digs. Rachelle Remund served four points and the Dons played great defense, taking a late 24-23 lead. Tamara Hansen came off the bench to provide tough serving and back row digs. The match was tied at 25-25 before Lone Peak Served the winning point J27-25. j "Tamara deserves a lot bf credit; she served well and gave us a huge lift in a pressure situation. Tamara has worked hard and showed senior leadership against a tough team," said Coach Diana Troyer. Game two was a battle early with the lead bouncing back and forth. The Dons were playing above the net, and tied the game at 9-9. Lone Peak called time out to make adjustments, and the time out knocked SF out of rhythm. The Lady Dons committed errors late in the game and Lone Peak ran away 25-16. Game three repeated the pattern of game two. The Dons came out strong, Erin Redd had five kills and Mary Stirland had five digs as SF led 8-6. Some errant passes and nice back row kills allowed the Knights to string together two- and three-point rallies and Lone Peak put the Dons away 25-14. "We started well and played hard tonight. These girls can play with anyone in this region. These girls have the talent to play with anyone in our region. "We're gonna get better and better and then we're gonna go to BYU together." The Salem Hills Lady Skyhawks took on Delta at home Wednesday, Oct. 1. It was an intense game that went into double overtime, but ended in a 0-0 tie. The ladies played their hearts out for 100 minutes of soccer. The Skyhawks controlled most of the game, and outshot the Rabbits 12-6. But the shots did not find the back of the net. Haiiey Ingram nearly saved the day a couple of times, with great shots. Her most memorable shot was near the end of the second overtime, when she powered a beautiful far post shot that banged off the post. The defense was stellar again, with Kaylyn Sly as the keeper. The defense now had back-to-back shutouts at home, and they had not yielded a goal at home in over 220 minutes. April Holdawayplayedlock-down defense on her left wing, and Brianna Wilding stepped up big in her move to the stopper position. Holdaway and Wilding were the MVPs for the game. In the JV game, Salem defeated Delta 3-0. MVP Haiiey Ingram unleashed on the Rabbits in the second half. After a frustrating varsity game of not being able to get the ball in the net, Haiiey scored twice and assisted the third goal by Kallee Wilson, as the Lady Skyhawks easily beat the Delta Rabbits. Margo Brockbank assisted Hailey's first goal. These two continue to build chemistry in their young soccer careers. Sly and her defense earned their eighth shutout. |
