Show -N E W S- Spanish Fork Covering what matters most WEDNESDAY, FERUARY 20, 2008 • A3 Reading about America's candidates Out of the Best Books Lu Ann Staheli Like it -or not, we are in the middle of the political season. We've seen campaigns come, and we've seen some go. What does , is all mean? Who should we vote for? Which candidate truly represents our goals and values? Can we believe the media, or is there someplace else we should go tofindout more about who each candidate is and what they believe in? Biographies or books written by the candidate themselves are always a good place to start, and the remaining crop has a fair number of books available among them. Democratic Senator Barack Obama offers The Audacity of Hope: Thoughts on Reclaiming the American Dream and Dreams from My Father: A Story of Race and Inheritance. Also available is Barack Obama in His Own Words by Obama and Lisa Rogak. Former First Lady and New York Democratic Senator Hillary Clinton wrote her memoir Living History in 2004. Her award-winning 1996 book // Takes a Village supports her philosophy on raising children, and perhaps the requirements of the country to help a parent do so. Republican front-runner John McCain and co-writer Mark Salter have a series of books that include Faith of My Fathers : A Family Memoir, Worth the Fighting for: A Memoir, and the upcoming Hard Call: The Art of Great Decisions. Governor Mike Huckabee is no stranger to the publication world. His most recent book, From Hope to Higher Ground: My Vision for Restoring America's Greatness, joins not only his other political books — From Hope to Higher Ground: 12 STOPS to Restoring America's Greatness, Character Makes a Difference: Where I'm From, Where I've Been, and What I Believe, and Character Is the Issue: How People With Integrity Can Revolutionize America, — but also a diet book (Quit Digging Your Grave with a Knife and Fork: A 12-Stop Program to End Bad Habits and Begin a Healthy Lifestyle), Kids Who Kill: Confronting Our Culture of Violence and a series of faith-based self-help books (Living Beyond Your Lifetime: How to be Intentional About the Legacy You Leave, The Godly Path of Least Resistance, The Joy of Supernatural Thinking: Believing God for the Impossible). Fans of Ron Paul, will want to read The Revolution: A Manifesto, A Foreign Policy of Freedom: Peace, Commerce, and Honest Friendship, Freedom Under Siege, and Gold, Peace, and Prosperity. If your favorite candidate is no longer in the race, you can still read about them to see what America missed, and maybe you'll pick up one of these books at a discount price. (Leadership by Rudy Giuliani, Turnaround: Crisis, Leadership, and the Olympic Games by Mitt Romney, Ending Poverty in America: How to Restore the American Dream by John Edwards, Marion Crain and Arne L. Kalleberg). In the meantime, while we wait to see who the final nominees will be, check out the following book by former Speaker-of-the* House, Newt Gingrich. Real Change: From the World that Fails to the World That Works by Newt Gingrich (Renergy Publishing, 2008) "We're standing on the edge of a potential golden age for America. Advances in technology, science, engineering, and medicine hold the promise of benefits our parents couldn't even dream of. If we make the right choices now, America will enjoy a level of prosperity, safety, and freedom unknown to previous generations. But if we make the wrong choices, we will suffer Out of the mouth of babes Life After Birth Janene Baadsgaard Children are our greatest teachers about love. We, as adults, have grown accustomed to ignoring each other. When we walk down a sidewalk and see a stranger coming the other way, most of us drop our eyes and say nothing as we pass. If we stand in an elevator with a fellow rider, most of us back into the farthest corner in steely silence, avoiding touch, conversation and eye contact Children haven't learned our cultural taboos or adult self' consciousness. They wave at strangers in the grocery store and shout things like, "Hey, you want to see my new underwear!" Once I was holding my young daughter's hand while we passed an ill-kept homeless man weaving down the street. He had long greasy hair, dirty clothes and reeked of body odor, liquor and tobacco. I lowered my eyes and kept my distance, hoping he wouldn't ask me for a handout My young daughter, on the other hand, ran over to this man, stood perfectly still, then stared at him in wide-eyed awe. "Look Mom! It's Jesus!" she shouted excitedly. The man gently tilted his head in acknowledgement and smiled back at my little girl. Then he glanced up at me with a glimmer in his eyes. We were both humbled at the way my daughter had seen him. When do we stop seeing the amazing beauty in the people around us? When do we stop being excited the very serious consequences of a set of challenges we choose to ignore! . . . We the people can force real.change and can secure the kind of future America and our children and grandchildren deserve." All the candidates claim they "are the candidate of change, but according to Gingrich, the only way America can get the change they desire is for every one of us to insist that change — real change — happens. From our national leaders to the local ones, we can influence the way our country is moving by demanding results. This book is fascinating, filled with information about everything from the political system to the war on terror, including the commonalities that keeps us from truly being divided between the red and blue states as the media would like us to believe. If you want to know what you can do to keep America strong, this is the book that can change your life." I was recently asked to teach the three-year-olds at church. This is their first experience without the toys and treats they used to get in the nursery. Now that they have reached the ripe old age of three, all they get is . . . me. Talk about a big disappointment. After other adults try to keep my lively, wiggly group of three-yearolds quiet during teaching time and singing time with the older children for an hour, Janene Baadsgaard I get them for about an hour in a tiny classroom.
