Benson, age 16, and Samuel, age 15, have been visiting Utah since August with a host family, Coral and Doug Terry. They came to Utah for orthopedic work at the Shriner's Hospital. Benson had his amputated arm repaired and will receive a prosthetic arm, and Samuel had a very bad foot turned and repaired. These two young men are from the Maasi Tribe in Kenya and shared their life experiences with Mrs. Burnah's first-grade, Mrs. Griffin's third-grade and Mrs. Hiatt's fifth-grade classes. Foothills Elernentary presented a large box of books to send with Benson and Samuel back to Kenya for their elementary school. Students teamed up and choreographed jump rope routines that were showcased at a jump-off competition. Each team spent time practicing before and after school and at recesses. Then each grade level hosted a jump-off. Teams were judged on the number of tricks in the routine, the difficulty or originality of the tricks and how many mistakes were made during the routine. One winning team was selected from each grade level. The idea for the jump-off came from students in Mrs. Gait's fourth grade class. Her students felt that jumping rope was a great way to exercise which is a focus at Riverview due to their participation in the Gold Medal Schools program.
