Show orts SP Coveting what matters most WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 12, 2007 • B1 Devils Dons Chad Vest STAFF WRITER The Spanish Fork/ Springville rivalry has given fans plenty of drama throughout the years. In this year's match-up, there were plenty of defensive stands by each team. However, the difference in this ball game proved to be turnovers and big plays. The Don defense forced five takeaways, while the special teams unit came up with another. A strong ground attack led by tailback Trevor Randolph (12 rushes for 125 yards) coupled with big plays and an amazing defense, gave the Dons their first home victory by the score of 20-0. Prior to opening kickoff, a Highway Patrol officer delivered the game ball from a helicopterflownin at midfield. The Dons were pinned at their own five when Trevor Randolph used his blockers and a burst of speed to. break outside for a thrilling 50-yard run. A few plays later, QB Breck Lewis hit a wide-open Wilson who bulldozed his way to the Springvillefiveyard-line, but a penalty called it back. The Red Devil defense prevailed on fourth down, which gave their offense a window for opportunity. However, that window soon closed when DB Clay Kerecman stripped the ball from a Devil WR which set up the Dons'firstscore. On the next play, Lewis hit a streaking Jordunn Martinson for a 30yard touchdown reception. There were some oohs and ahs from the hometown crowd following the next big play. Gardner's punt was received at the 16-yard line by an awaiting Cameron Comer. But the BYU-bound Comer lost the pigskin due to a bone- Namon Bills / Spanish Fork News I CAN FEEL A DEVIL WALKING NEXT TO ME: Breck Lewis evades three devils on a quarterback keeper. The Dons dispatched the Devils, 20-0. crushing hit by Kerecman, and Dakota Belliston quickly recovered. Unfortunately, the offense couldn't capitalize on this turnover as the Red Devil defense stuffed the Dons in four plays. But it wouldn't matter because the SF defense came up with another huge play. Springville went for the homerun ball, but it was picked off by DB Zac Clayton at midfield. Lewis then hooked up with tight end Richard Wilson on two pass plays to get the Dons within striking distance. Randolph took a handoff and ran offtackle for a six-yard score, giving his team a 14-0 lead. Springville's offense found success on their next possession with a 60-yard pass play, but it turned into another nightmare. Once again, Kerecman stripped the ball, this time from behind on a great hustle play to prevent a Red Devil score. Spanish went up 17-0 just seconds before the half on a 22-yard field goal by senior Alan Measom. The Dons scored their final points of the night in the third quarter. With 9:35 remaining, Measom again split the uprights with a 24yard chip-shot to go up 20-0. Several drives later, Randolph ripped off a 30yard run. He took the handoff, sliced through the line, then weaved around white jerseys, and made a Walter Paytonlike stutter step to pick up a big first down. This drive was capped off with a TD toss to Randolph but it was nullified by a holding call. Most of the second half resulted in a lights-out defense from both squads. Spanish Fork's defense recorded six sacks on the night, including two apiece from Chris Olson and Kyle Weight. The Don run defense yielded an impressive -8 yards rushing and senior defensive lineman Justin Reynolds snagged an interception. The Dons will host HunterFriday, Sept. 15 at 7 p.m. to close out the preseason with their Homecoming game.
