The article that outlined 50 years for the 12th Ward that was in the June 27, 2007, issue had a few errors that need correcting. The 12th ward never met in the original 1st ward building. It was torn down in 1937 and replaced by the present building located at 300 East Center Street. This was the home of the 12th ward when it was created in 1957. The building has been remodeled twice since then, but the west and north sections are the original building. Bishop Ernest Hawkins was sustained July 31, 1988 with Barrett Whitaker and Dale Bills as counselors. Later, on April 12, 1993, Bills was released to serve on the high council, and Scott Howell was sustained as a counselor to Bishop Hawkins. On July 18, 1993, Bishop Hawkins was released and Curtis Henderson was sustained as bishop, with David Danielson and Douglas Nielson as counselors. On July 12, 1998, Bishop Henderson was released and Barrett Whitaker was sustained as bishop with Rick Hereth and Ron Chandler as counselors. Later, when Brother Hereth moved from the ward, he was released and Kyle Bufton was sustained as counselor on Jan. 5, 2003. The 12th ward has had 11 bishops within 50 years. Three have passed away: J.C. Henderson, Clyde J. Lundell, and Don A. Taylor. All the others, except Bishop Swenson still live in the ward. Bishop Swenson moved in June 2006. ...... „ ...,( Making food storage deserts 2 3/4 cup milk 3 Tablespoons Tapioca 1 egg, slightly beaten Dawn Van Nosdol 1 teaspoon vanilla Combine everything I have three really good, except the vanilla, in a very easy, food storagesaucepan. The Thurber school was There and Back Again built in 1910 and named after Albert K. Thurber, a prominent citizen in Spanish Fork. It served the community for many years. In 1984 it was remodeled into the current city offices. It would have been such a shame to have torn it down. I don't know who the person was that said, "No, we're not going to tear this school down - it's too good of a building. We'll find another use for it." Maybe it was the consensus of more than one person, but I think someone had to give the final yes or no answer, and luckily for us, it was no. The Central school was the oldest school, having been built in 1896. It was constructed for the cost of $14,500! The rooms were heated by stoves until a furnace was installed later. At first, drinking water was carried from an old well. Water was pulled up with a bucket on a rope. There was no electricity. Oil lamps furnished light. Outside lavatories were provided. It was known as The art school. One of the annual traditions was the annual Art Exhibit which was started in 1934. Through this evejH, the school acquired many See ELEMENTARY • A3 |
