But few know of his love however, for antique cars. And it is that passion that roped Ainge into chairing the Salem Days Car Show this year. "I think a car show is one of the events that appeals to both young and old," he said. "Kids and teens naturally love cars and for older people, it's nostalgic for them. I'm not that old, but I remember cars like that roddin' Main when I was a kid." The show, held on Saturday, Aug. 11 at the Downtown Ball Park, is open to all auto aficionados. "I really enjoy seeing old classics that have been restored — as close to original as possible — you know, the way they were," Ainge said. "But it's fun to check out the Steve Hardman EDITOR restored the 1951 Chevrolet pickup that his grandfather bought new over 50 years ago. Or better said, he had it restored. "I'm a novice when it comes to cars," he said. "I love old vehicles, but I'm really a spectator. I can't talk the talk with these guys, but it's exciting being around them." Ainge admitted his dream car is a late '60s Corvette. "I love those cars," he said. t The sleek design — the fast look — they scream sports car. They're the king of sports cars." His goal for the car show this year is to get it started and build on it next year and each year following. "I would love to eventually have a cruise night," Ainge said. "I see doing it around the Pond with entertainment at Knoll Park. That would be a lot of fun. I just want an event that people can look forward to each year." He would also like the entrants to be in the parade before parking for the show. "This is going to be a neat event," he said. So don't miss the Salem Days Car Show on Saturday, August 11 from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. at the downtown ball park. Registration forms are available at Salem City Office.
