Show The Garfield County Insider FYJPANGUITCHI @mai. cos oegiegoGold was found in Panguitch. Panguitch hosted the Western Regional Cal Ripken 9 year old tournament. The Town fed 550 hungry folks at the Pavilion and everyone there loved it. Thanks to the City workers, Coaches, a couple of Panguitch Lions they really crank everyone through in about an hour. Mayor Talbot welcomed all that were there, and they were the politest kids ever, thanking you for anything that was done for them. Many of these teams came from California, a number of them from the San Francisco area. Each team introduced themselves and what position they played. The teams located around Bakersfield were thrilled to be away from the heat, it was 114 degrees when they left home. They even loved the rain storm and had much praise for the grounds crew and how fast they got the fields up and running. Bakersfield ended up winning the tournament, with Laguna (San Francisco) taking second. There were 800 in this group and it is the third tournament, that Panguitch has hosted this year. Many of those in attendance went on out to the many canyons in our area, this is a natural for bringing people into our area. Ball Park Manager Greg Excel and Coach Clint Barney wanted to thank all of those in Town that made this Tournament run so well. Talking to Greg and Coach Barney I found out that the host City gets to place a team in the tournament and that Panguitch's second place in the nine year old tournament two years ago was the first time that the Panguitch team had ever won a game. The twelve year old team this year was the first time we ever won our tournament, I always thought that with all the great success that Coach Barney has had with the High School teams, that it started with little league. Win lose or draw it is a great experience for all the kids. Many of these teams stay in the motels and buy or eat here in town. Many thanks to Greg and Clint for all the work that you do to make these wonderful facilities bring so many folks to our town. They are working on bringing a 13 year old tournament here next year. The Gillett's, John and Jennifer and their children have moved to Manti. John is former Bishop of the 1st Ward and Math Teacher at the High School and has accepted a Vice Principal position at Manti High School They were many towns people helping to load a semi truck with their belongings. The Gillett's were met in Manti by a large group of the town's people there, who had food and goodies waiting for them. The Gillett's were overwhelmed with all of the love from both of the people, those they knew and those who will soon become friends. The Gillett's and their great kids will be badly missed; they are a one in a million family. Their home here in Panguitch is for sale (you can get it for about what you would pay in rent). Eva Marshall passed away three days before her 101st birthday, just as she had planned, she didn't want to have another birthday. Eva married Maurice Miles on Sept. 6, 1929 in the St. George Temple. They had four children, 14 grandchildren, 32 greatgrandchildren and eight great-great grandchildren, what a legacy she leaves behind. Jennifer Perkins is starting her internship in the sport physical therapy field, this school year. Britney Frandsen Dodds starts with a kindergarten teaching position at the beginning of the school year, her cousin Annie Frandsen is starting in a Masters program up at Utah State. These girls all are products of Panguitch High School. How time flies, it only seemed like yesterday that Lagoon opened up, 125 years ago. In 1886 the park opened up as the Lake Park. The Carousel with its 45 hand-carved horses and characters opened and is still operating since 1905. The wooden Roller Coaster began in 1927 and hasn't stopped. In 1989 the water park opened and continues Lagoon's love affair with water fun. Did you know that out at Bryce Canyon that it has snowed or rained every Sunday since the start of the shuttle runs, in early May. The numbers on the shuttle passengers are up, last Thursday there were 4,000 riders. Rocky Mountain fuel has won a $117 million increase in your power bill. This should amount to about $3.20 on your monthly power bill. Chevron oil profit was up 43 per cent for the second quarter, as was most of the big oil companies. Gas in Richfield is $3.46 and it is much lower in the SLC area at $3.25 a gallon. Matt Houston and Kory Owens are really stoked on how well their wrestlers are doing in the camps that they have been at. Brandon Birch has decided to hang up the basketball and go with the wrestlers. With the addition of Brandon and the return of Jory Owens, the Cole Brothers , Sam Vasquez, Tyler Brinkerhoff and a lot of really good tough guys. Coaches Houston and Owens start these kids out when they were 4 or 5 years old and has almost 100 kids taking part in this fun sport. Last years team only lost one wrestler to graduation, so maybe this will be the year.. The Ladies down at the Senior Citizens, cooking is getting so good that they are feeding on an average of 90 meals a day and had a birthday luncheon of 120. Don't forget to get your stuff ready for the up and coming County Fair, it is only three weeks away. The Panguitch Lions will be cooking the County Commissioners luncheon on Saturday the 20th, for tips. The Lions will be hosting the Demolition Derby in the evening, those that have cars need to enter early the fees go from $25 to $50 on the 13th. The gate that controls the water that comes out of the dam, up at Panguitch Lake has gotten stuck in the open position. There is a lot of water coming down the river and all of the people that know about these things have been called but to no avail. If you see any problem anywhere along the river please call 911 and report it, so appropriate action can be taken, before it gets out of control. Remember to shop local when you can, there are plenty of unique gifts for weddings or birthdays and with your kids getting ready for school check out our local clothing. See ya! Mack 0.
