Show The Garfield County Insider June 16 2011 LIMMAIIIIEWAREAMIn by Vicki D. Syrett 679-8687 or vickidiane36@hotmail.com David Rose, son of Milt and Brenda Rose, completed the Squaw Peak 50 mile race on June 4th. Their sonin-law, Raymond Overson, also ran in the same race. The two crossed the finish line together, having run an average of 15 minutes per mile for the grueling 50 mile mountain trail course. This is an accomplishment to be proud of. Carrie Platt is at home recovering from preliminary surgery in the new HC Hospital in Murray Utah. We send our prayers and love out to her and wish her well with the next leg of her treatments. Carrie is the daughter of Ken and Artoise Platt of Henrieville. Matt and Kathy Fletcher and children are moving back to Cannonville for the summer and living in their own home. Glad to see them back among us. We are sorry to hear of the passing of Nancy Chuppais who used to live out on the blue ridge in the north end of Tropic. Her funeral was held last Wednesday in Linden Utah. She was the sister of Ken Hall of Cannonville and we extend our condolences to him and his family. On Monday last, nine women met and worked on a quilt to help me prepare for my grandson Jordan Jensen, and his wedding. It was amazing how fast it went. We started at two and finished just before four. I couldn't believe it and I can tell you I was astounded and the speed everyone tied on that quilt. It turned out beautifully. I will be forever grateful for the help of Sandy Johnson who arranged it all and tiers Kay Shakespear, Sheree Walstad, Ramona Morreale, Helen Willis, Lyllian Le Fevre, Glenna Fletcher, Anita Fletcher, and Brenda Rose. Of course I was there also. Thank you ladies for your kind help. I owe you. A basketball camp has been held at the Bryce Valley High School. There were three sections to it and it brought out many kids from the area. It ran from Monday through Wednesday with the first session for 3rd thru 5th grade at 10:00-12:30. The second group got underway at 1:00 - 3:30 P.M. for the 6th thru 8th graders and the third group, 9th thru 12th grade, went from 5:00 - 8:30 P.M. It was a great experience for the kids and they had a coach come in from Cedar City. There were some anonymous donors to help pay the tuition cost of this basketball camp and this enabled some kids to go and join in. Thanks to these special people. The fire station in Henrieville is looking great. It looks finished from the outside but they still have to go through some last minute items before it is fully ready. The Henrieville Elders held a BBQ dinner at the town park. It was absolutely delicious with ribs and chicken done in a tasty and delicious manner.. Lance Jagger was the chef and everyone thought the food was great. The Bryce Valley Elementary Library will be open on Wednesday's into July from 12:00 - 2:00 P.M. Samie Ott and Kim Stewart are in charge and will be tutoring reading and helping kids select books. Marci Nell gymnastics class is held on Tuesdays in the BV Elementary Gym. We hear it is a wonderful class and is full. Hayley Pollock is mining the same class up in Bryce Canyon City. Hope we get to see the results ladies. We are excited about this. Rae Smith and all of her family came back to Henrieville for a family reunion. While they were here they took time to clean and fix up Rae's home. She is living with a daughter in another town right now. It was good to see her at home for a little while. She had all of her kids and all but one of her grandchildren there to the reunion and to help with the clean up. We are happy to hear the Ed and Sandy Boger's daughter, Jessica and husband William Jones have moved back to Henrieville. Congratulations to Jory Twitchell and Milli Hughes on their June 24th Wedding coming up. Jory is the son of Monte and Rita Twitchell of Cannonville. It is exciting to see both Parker Clarke and Dustin Leslie home from their missions. Parker was in Sweden and is the son of Wes and Ellen Clarke. Dustin is the son of Janie Leslie of Henrieville. A very special person was honored last week and found out just how many people love and care about him. Steve Pollock was the recipient of many, many good wishes and caring people. First up was a Zoomba Marathon put together by Shantel Manning where they raised a lot of money tohelp out. They actually raised more than they thought they would and were very excited. The second event took place at the Duck Race on June8th. The community really came out to make a successful "Rubber Ducky" contest and dinner to benefit Steve Pollock. Annette Chynoweth put the event together and Mike and Dixie Burbidge put in a great deal of time pulling it off. Their hard work was greatly appreciated. Ferrell Brinkerhoff and Nicholas Foods donated all the meats and Clint Brinkerhoff donated all the buns. Pioneer Village was kind enough to let us use their restaurant which is an ideal place to hold community events. Everyone brought fantastic salads and desserts to make the dinner a succes. The generosity of the community and even tourists was very touching. The big event was the rubber ducky race! Over 430 ducks were sold and the competition was fierce to see which duck crossed the finish line first. Young Kage Ott's duck finnaly won out and he received the $100.00 for having the most successful duck. Other winners and losers won candy bars. The duck contest is great fun and this was our second annual duck race. We hope to have it continue for many more years. Finally the "Pizza Place" dedicated the night to Steve Pollock and they had a record breaking night.. They sold over 1,000 pizzas. It was called "Serve It Up for Steve". And boy did you ever. Everyone involved in any way we thank you from the bottom of our hearts for this wonderful tribute to a much loved friend. We wish Steve the very best in his fight and we know he will win! ! God Bless you Steve. You know the people in this area always come through when someone is in need. It has been proven over and over again. How lucky we are to live in such a community. Hope you all have a good week and remember to call or email your news to me. Thanks VS SENIOR CITIZEN LUNCHES: Call by 10:00 A.M. if you want a meal. 679-8666. $2.50 is the suggested donation.
