Last year, this environmental stewardship program collected 913,730 pounds of trash and recyclables at Lake Powell, far surpassing its goals. "While Trash Trackers plays an immense role in keeping the lake clean, every visitor to the lake can play a role by reading our eco-friendly tips list," says Cody Bailey, interpretative programs manager at Lake Powell Resorts & Marinas. "Lake Powell Resorts & Marinas has provided recycling trailers and bins at all launch ramps, lodge buildings and campground areas to encourage visitors to take part in the program, increasing the amount of material we are recycling." The Trash Trackers program was started by Lake Powell Resorts & Marinas in cooperation with National Park Service's Volunteers-In-Parks Program 22 years ago. The volunteers who descend upon Lake Powell range from first-time visitors to program veterans with decades of experience. Applications for the 2011 season opened on Feb. 1, 119 people have applied for the 100 spots, a third of whom are new to the Trash Tracker program. Trash Trackers will operate 25 trips ranging from five to seven days through the "clean up" window. Trips leave both from Bullfrog Marina in Utah and Wahweap Marina in Arizona. For more information on the program please visit: http://www.nps.gov/glca/supportyourpark/trashtracker.htm. In 2010 the program removed 913,730 pounds of trash and recyclables from the lake, shattering its 700,000 pound goal by nearly 20 percent. The trash was collected by Trash Trackers volunteers and from the trash and recycling bins at docks. Environmental achievements for 2010's program include recycling 34,056 pounds of lead acid batteries, 3,340 pounds of rubber tires, and 229,910 pounds of scrap metal. This year the program aims to remove 900,000 pounds from the lake and its beaches. Everyone spending time on Lake Powell is encouraged to turn their vacation into an eco-friendly holiday by following these tips: • Secure loose items on boat decks and shores: much of the trash in the lake has been blown off of houseboat decks and beaches by wind • Properly dispose trash and recyclables: bins have been provided at launch ramps, lodge facilities and campsites for your convenience. It is illegal to burn trash or to dispose of trash in the lake. • Keep golf balls out of the lake: use designated golfing facilities as opposed to hitting golf balls into the lake. • Use appropriate facilities for waste: Use portable toilets when camping to reduce the chance of impairing water quality with improperly disposed waste. • Don't carve or paint on rocks: Carving or spray painting rocks is graffiti and is illegal within the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. • Leave fireworks at home: Fireworks are illegal within national parks. The chemicals can harm the water quality and ecosystem of the lake. • Cleanup after yourself and others: Practice leave no trace by taking everything you brought to Lake Powell back out with you when you leave. To help leave the area cleaner than you found it, take an empty trash bag on shore excursions to remove trash left behind by other visitors. • Brent Sixty percent of American taxpayers trust tax preparers to prepare their taxes and find every tax credit and deduction allowed by law. Other taxpayers choose to prepare their taxes themselves. Unfortunately, many of them make serious mistakes on their returns. Participating H&R Block retail tax offices will offer free Second Look® reviews through March 31. This program helps taxpayers ensure the accuracy of 2007-2010 returns not prepared by H&R Block. "I don't like doing taxes; numbers aren't my thing," said Theresa Dudley-Ayers, Greenback, Tenn. "There's a lot I guessed at and I have a feeling I guessed wrong." In fact, Dudley-Ayers overlooked several valuable credits and deductions. After an H&R Block Second Look, her tax professional was able to find her more than $5,000 back on her tax return. Dudley-Ayers' story, along with several other like-stories, became the backbone of the company's new, successful, national advertising campaign. This campaign showcased Second Look® events in Greenback, Tenn., and Los Angeles, in which a number of people were found with major errors on their returns. Some of them overlooked credits and deductions. You can view some of the success stories by going to www.neversettleforless. corn. Some of the more cornmonly missed credits and deductions include: * Making Work Pay Credit — Up to $800 for married filing jointly and $400 for single filers is available for the last time on the 2010 tax return * American Opportunity Credit — This $2,500 credit is available to cover each eligible student's first four years of college, potentially equaling a $10,000 credit over four years * Energy efficient upgrades — The 2009-10 maximum credit of $1,500 is available on home upgrades such as exterior windows, exterior doors, and energy efficient furnaces, central air-conditioners, and many other items. * Earned Income Tax Credit — Missed by approximately 20 percent of those who are eligible, this credit can mean an additional $5,666 refund for lowerincome working taxpayers. "Let's face it, these are tough economic times, and no one can afford to leave money on the table," said Kristi Miller, Master Tax Advisor at H&R Block. "Taxpayers too often overlook credits and deductions to which they are entitled, and are missing out on possibly hundreds or thousands of dollars. They trust their tax preparers and doit-yourself software packages to get it right for them. H&R Block tax professionals undergo specific training on new tax laws every year. It's the clients' money. We're just getting them all the refund that they deserve." According to The Tax Institute at H&R Block, a nationwide survey showed 62 percent of taxpayers didn't know they could file an amended return to claim missed credits or deductions. Generally, taxpayers can amend a return to claim a refund up to three years after the return due date, making the deadline to amend a 2007 return April 18, 2011. Taxpayers who want to take advantage of this limited time offer can find an H&R Block office near them, and a tax professional who fits their needs, at www.hrblock.com . H&R Block provides guaranteed, income tax return preparation services through its company-owned and franchise offices, and the H&R Block At Home online and desktop solutions.
