I thoughr all along that the Lady Cats and the Piute Thunderbirds would meet up in the Region 20 playoffs. Little did I know that the number 1 and 2 teams in the State would be playing for third and forth place. The Cats started off the week on Wednesday night with and easy win over a much improved Escalante Moquis. Escalante with only 9 girls only had to play one game, instead of two, without the JV game. They did much better and this allowed the Cats some badly needed practice. The Cats won 43 to 18 and Breanne Bateman had her out side shot going for 14 points. However in the Thursday night game against the Wayne Badger, it was a defensive battle. The Cats easily beat Wayne in their two prior meetings, but not that night. The Cats couldn't buy a basket, they missed lay ups, three pointers and free throws. The Cats led the Badgers into to the forth quarter, leading by JOIN US FOR THEE 8TH ANNUAL By Mack Oetting 5 points, only to have to settle for only 3 points in the last quarter. Wayne made up the ground and eked out a two point victory 29 to 27. The 27 was 20 points below the girl's team average per game. In the next game between the Bryce Valley Mustangs and Piute Thunderbirds the results ended up like Panguitch and Piute. Piute easily beat BV in their two earlier meeting, but the Lady Mustangs ran away with the game, for a very impressive win. Friday night the Lady Cats also ran away with the game with the former 1# team, Piute. The Cats finally put a whole team effort together and beat the Thunderbirds 54 to 27. Carly Holman had her best game of the year by scoring 12 points. Kalani Norris led all the scorers in each of these three games. Kalani made Region 20 All Academic team with a 4.0 GPA and Kalani and Breanne Bateman made the Region 71j:tE 4410 ( 4°. By taking 3 place instead of 4th the Lady Cats don't have to make the long trip to SLC for the play in game. Last Monday was our play in game, at home and hopefully we are in the State Tournament. See the schedules for game times. I missed the come back of the year in the Wayne and Bryce Valley game. I had gone out to warm up the bus, with the Badgers leading the game by six points. BV got off to a great start scoring 5 points in the first minute. The Badgers wouldn't have any of that and held the Mustangs to only 1 other point, in the first half. Wayne led the game at half time 18 to 6. After the half the Mustangs cut away at the lead and trailed by 8 points. BV started to foul and the Badgers missed a lot of their free throws and the Mustangs cut the lead to 4, but the Badgers built the lead back up to 6 with less than two minutes, that's when I left to warm up the bus. When the team came they told me that Bryce Valley scored the last 12 points and won the game by six. Way to go Mustangs you are the Region 20 champs, hopefully since Panguitch is in another bracket from you maybe we will meet up again in the State finals. I don't know what they put in the water down in Bryce Valley but the Mustangs really took it to the Bob Cats, beating us by 23. The Cats won here on a buzzer beater in their last meeting and I think we must have ticked them off. The Mustangs are the current State Champions and they played like it on Tuesday. The Mustangs have a new Player by the name of Jake Pearson who had a very good game scoring 20 points and last years All State Case Roundy was high point scorer with 25. Riley Miller with out much help ended up with 24 points for the Cats. The Mustangs have lost quite a few games this year, but if they play like last Tuesday they should repeat. Well the Bobcats tough guy took 5th place at State. Jory Owens and Cade Coles won their weight classes and are State Champions. Jory and Cade did not loose a 1 A match all year, the is the second year in row that Jory has done that, all year long Jory has had only 6 points scored against him. I think what makes these two so special are that they work out against each other, during training. Sam Vasquez took third place and Tyler Brinkerhoff took 4th in the giant's class. Matt Houston and Cory Owens the coaches who have worked with most of these boys, since they were in kindergarten, only loses one wrestler and hopes to pick up 9 more in the freshman class. Altamont was an easy winner, scoring enough points on Friday to win the tournament, with 10 of their boys going into the finals in 13 weights. Duchesne was second, Monticello third, Wayne fourth and the Bobcats placing a very strong fifth place. |
