Show Page ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT REHABILITATE FAILING PARK SEWAGE SYSTEM AT BRYCE CANYON NATIONAL PARK Available for Public Review Bryce Canyon National Park Acting Superintendent Kathleen Gonder, announced that the Environmental Assessment (EA) for the park's Rehabilitate Failing Park Sewage System Project has been completed and is available for public review and comment. Rehabilitate Failing Park Sewage System Project The National Park Service (NPS) proposes to rehabilitate the failing sewage system within Bryce Canyon National Park, Utah. The rehabilitation would provide a safe, healthy, and functional environment, and maintain public health and future service for park visitors and staff. Portions of the sanitary sewage collection system were originally constructed in 1958 of clay pipe and currently service the lodge, staff housing, and visitor center before feeding into sewage treatment lagoons. Sections of the sewage system have deteriorated significantly with age. These sections of the system and associated manholes are breaking into pieces that regularly clog the system and cause raw sewage to back up, leak out of the system, and spill onto the ground from backed-up manholes. The sewer system has not been replaced since 1958 with the exception of maintenance repairs to small sections of the sewer line and manholes. Three alternatives, including the no-action alternative, were identified based on program goals and objectives, internal scoping, guidance from existing park plans, and policy guidance from the NPS. In July 2009, the park solicited help from the public in identifying issues associated with the proposed Project and alternatives. The NPS used information gathered from the public; as well as Federal, State, and local agencies and data generated by the NPS to complete the EA. The EA analyzes alternative A - no action, alternative B - open-cut trench methodology for sewer line replacement; and alternative C - the agency's preferred alternative, a modified version of alternative B, that reduces potential impacts to the federally listed Utah prairie dog (UPD) by utilizing pipe bursting methodology through active UPD colonies. We invite the public to comment on the EA. The document is available on our website at http://www. nps.gov/brca/parkmgmt/planning.htm under Park Planning and also on the NPS Planning, Environment, and Public Comment (PEPC) webpage at http:// parkplanning.nps.gov/. If you would like to receive a paper document, please contact the park at (435) 8344753. Copies of the EA will be available for review at the Bryce Canyon Visitor Center as well as the following Utah public libraries: Panguitch, Salt Lake City, and Tropic Centennial Hall. Copies are also available for review at the following university/college libraries: Southern Utah University, Cedar City; Brigham Young University, Provo; University of Utah, Salt Lake City; and Utah State University, Logan.
