The debt-load of Escalante City prevented getting more loan monies to construct Escalante Fire Station No 1, and a number of the finish projects were deleted from the original construction project. Through the kindness of local merchant donations and the support of the residents of Escalante, over $3,000 was raised to get some of these projects completed. In partnership with the Potato Valley Lions club, volunteers served Breakfast to over 100 folks during the July 3rd Celebration at Town Center Park . During the July 24th Celebration, Friends and Volunteers sold raffle tickets for a number of items . Donated by the Escalante Lions Club, Kay Brooke won the Gun. Desert Wolfe donated a painting won by Bill Dunaway. The Circle D donated gift certificates, winners were: Tracie Sidwell for $10.00; Chris Alvey for $20.00; and Brandy Kennedy for $20.00. The Escalante Outfitters donated a $65.00 gift certificate won by Terry Olsen. A camp backpack donated by Broken Bow RV Park was won by Peggy Pratt. And the Brass Hammer donated by Desert Doc was won by Baylor Spencer. During the July 24th celebration, a ribbon cutting took place with Mayor Taylor, Fire Chief Donnie Porter and Project Manager and City Council Member Jeff Dunn. " Without the commitment and support of Councilman Dunn, we would not be as far along as we are today", said Fire Chief Porter. " With 14 volunteer fire fighters, and the friends, you can look forward to more fun during the July 3rd celebration each year. " If you are interested in volunteering as either a Fire Fighter or a member of the "Friends", contact Chief Porter at 616-4672. CHECK IT OUT! Adam Hiscock, a 22-year-old geology major at the University of Utah, was the first recipient of a Grand Staircase Escalante Partners 2C0 (GSEP) grant that aims to encourage Fe&?:7, scientific research on the National PADDED PAK Monument's 1.9 million acres. f I fi. Adam spent much of this summer I sifting through the Monument's entire paleontology collection — bones and fossils that researchers have collected in the field since the mid1990s. Hiscock organized the items by year, entered them into a digital spreadsheet and labeled them with specimen numbers he got from the Utah Museum of Natural History. "Now everything's organized by year, and we have a nice database on the computer of what everything is, so researchers coming into the monument will be able to just sit down and find what they want to look at — a certain piece t. of bone, a UMNH VP #: 0/V 1VHVP 2 certain part Field Loca/ity Qqo rA-p - yl Date Collected: of an anic3/31/04 20q 2 2 4 1),.1i/Oli Repository: mal — really (Jr KA -32 Pleld Locality #: UMNH )ate Collected: gb -31, Formation/Member: KA:kc,csoox.11.11, quickly, and Stage: MNH .-,!epository: 4r) ((km research Taxa: Cry) .1 1 1. -0-,", S kull Foal it," Hiscock Datum: NAD 83 said. GSEP awards two Student Research Grants of up to $3,000 annually. Projects have to demonstrate relevance to the Monument, as well as demonstrate that the project uses plausible methods and has strong potential for success. Winning proposals this year have focused on paleontology and geology, but the grants are open to student researchers from any scientific discipline. "By focusing on college students, we hope to help train the next generation of scientists," said Partners science committee head Walter Fertig. "We also hope our funding will help answer both practical questions of interest to managers of Grand Staircase and basic research questions of benefit to the scientific community and the public."
