This is a fun event, with a lot of determined drivers out there trying to win the $1,500 first prize. We have four cars from Panguitch entered, so come on out and cheer them on. The Lions will have food at the concession stand, so make it a family outing along with dinner. The cost for the Derby is $7:00 for early tickets and $10:00 at the gate. Tickets are on sale at the City Hall, the County Building and at my house. Tickets will also be on sale at the Commissioners luncheon. There are a lot of Fair animal events going on all day long, that I haven't mentioned so check your program for those fun events. The Panguitch TARS (Teenage Age Republicans) had a retreat here last week. They had students come from Iron, Beaver, Piute, Washington as well as Garfield Counties. There was a camp out, at the Tebb's Ranch on the old road to Parowan. All went well till they were packing up when an 8 foot (or maybe a 2 footer) rattlesnake attacked them. Elaine Baldwin (their leader) whipped out her trusty pistol and dispatched the critter in his tracks. I am sure this will be one retreat that these kids will remember for a long time. The bus that takes the dialyis patients to Cedar for treatment is up and running. This is a great idea and starting in September the Wards will take turns on a weekly basis, instead of monthly. The Counties new bus is very easy to drive and doesn't require any special license. Garfield County second biggest crop seems to be marijuana. Sheriff Danny Perkins and his Deputies have found 6 groves in the last two years. These are very sophisticated operation, with drip water systems and one grove near Panguitch had tapped in to our domestic water system. These crops are very high quality pot and worth a lot of money, the last 3 groves found were out near Boulder, the estimate of these crops on the open market is about 15 million big ones. If you are out hiking or fishing and come across one of these farms get away as quick as possible and report your find to the Sheriff's office. It is suspected these operations are run by the Mexican Mafia, and they are really, really bad guys. Ardith Davies while digging in her garden found an old pin. It is a national rock hound pin and has a Panguitch chapter on it. She is wondering is there are any members from this club still around, if you know anything about this please give her a call. Rock hounding used to be big in this area, we have beautiful stones for the taking. I know George Proctor had a very large collection; maybe someone in his family has some information about this club. Need fire wood, K&D wood products are cutting 4x4 boards and are selling the ends for a small fee of $20.00 a pickup load. They also have 1" pieces that go for $5:00 a pickup load. This is a great way to fill out your fire wood needs for the up and coming winter. Well the summer is about over and baseball is starting, get a schedule for their games at the high school. Don't forget you can get season passes that are good for volley ball and boys and girls basketball. Next week the ATV rally starts, this could lead into a very big event in the future. Panguitch has everything for an event like this, great trails, you can go all the way up to Canada or down to Mexico on them. The scenery doesn't get any better than what we have locally and we have plenty of accommodation to house these riders and their families. Last week Panguitch hosted the first State High School rodeo of the year by Vicki D. Syrett 679-8687 or vickidiane36@hotmail.com We want the family of Faye Pollock to know they are in our thoughts and prayers as they mourn the loss of their wife, mother, grandmother and that she is now is a special part of their memory. She was married to DeVar Pollock of Tropic. Sandy Johnson went to Minersville to be with three of her daughters. Brady & Sarah Bradshaw and their four children, Jed and Rebecca Albrecht and their three children and Brady and Ruth Carter and their four children all gathered to have fun with mom and grandma. While Sandy was their her daughters and herself attended the Minersville Relief Society Mother, Daughter, and Granddaughter Social. It was a dinner and a movie and was a great deal of fun for all. Sandy is now back home and waiting a visit from Nathan and Esther Rigby and their two children who will be corning this week. Ruth Carter and her children will also be down to celebrate the last fling before school starts again. The fund raiser held in Henrieville to help build the new Fire Station was a huge success despite the rainy weather. Only one person brought their Harley Davidson. We think the rain scared the others off. There were two hot rod cars from the Hot Rod Ranch. The road was so wet they couldn't get going too fast. In fact, in a race between them and the one Harley the Harley won. The race was short, about 50 yards, but it was fun. Tell Johnson raced with them on his motorcycle and he finished close behind the hot rod. Carson Johnson tried to race on his horse but with all the noise that the hot rods made the poor horse wasn't having anything to do with it. Those hot rods are so loud that when they revved them up you could feel the vibrations through your chest. The food was awesome, smoked pork, burgers and hot dogs. The Norm and Ellen Davis family brought a special lemonade and smoothies made from fruit that were great. They also provided mini golf for the kids and Big Daddy's BBQ provided the food. The Burrows brother and Kenny Hall provided the entertainment. Merrill Burrows and his brothers sang for us also and did a great job. We always enjoy Kenny Hall and his entertainment was great. Alicia Brunson sang the National Anthem and We would like to thank did an outstanding the following sponsers for job. She is probably making it possible for the in her early teens and Color Country Baseball can sing like you team members from Bryce wouldn't believe. It Valley(Landyn Brinkerhoff was beautiful. Saand Ethan Nell) to be able to mantha Chynoweth, go attend the Southwest paBrittney Shakespear, cific Baseball Tournament. and Bailey Mathews We appreciate your support! made signs with the help of Lyllian Le Bryce Valley KOA Fevre and braved the Grand Staircase Store rain to invite travelers Bryce Valley Builders off the road to stop Pizza Place in and eat with us. Clarkes Store There were several Stone Canyon Inn tourists that stopped Bryce Valley Inn in. One group from Griffins Store France even stayed Tropic Town most of the day they Cannonville Town were enjoying themBryce Country Cabins selves so much. We Drew 2 U Carpet Cleaning give a special thanks Lelands Cheveron to Merrill Burrows and his brothers, Big and we had a lot of riders from town that took part. I know of a few that did well, however if someone would let me know I will put that information in the paper. Rodeo is a sport that takes a lot of practice and many would like to know about how they do. There were 18 bull riders in the finals on Saturday morning, usually that many don't go the final go around. We have a lot of our neighbors that are quite ill, remember them in your prayers. Last week my daughter Shawn Caine and wife Pat took a small trip to the "Ends of the Earth". The "Ends of the Earth" is a gallery of fine art photography. It is located at 7140 Hwy. 89. It is located in those 3 small dome shaped buildings on the right side of the road going to Hatch. The artist and owner and his wife live in one, display his awesome photography in one and another provides a work shop. The owner / photographer is William R. Chapman. He and his wife, Ilean, have lived in this area for 3 years. Shawn is going to teach digital photography as part of the art program at the high school. She went to talk to Mr. Chapman about a field trip to his gallery. Shawn and Pat went for 'A hour and stayed for 2 1/2 hours. If you have not been there it is well worth your time they didn't stop talking about the photography, the photographer and wife Ilean as well as the beautiful setting for hours.. Their home and gallery are located high up so the view is magnificent. Mr. Chapman has spent many years in Tibet so his home, gallery and work reflect his interest. This is a must see! How can they have been here for 3 years and we have just learned of them? Go welcome them and their "Ends of the Earth" talent to our area. Panguitch has another point of interest; with Hale's Art and Becky Whitney's Studio along with the "Ends of the Earth" we are going to be an art colony in no time. The addition of these fine art galleries adds a little culture to our sports minded community. Not that sports is not culture! Bite my tongue. Have a great week. Mackoetting @gmail. corn THANK YOU Daddy's BBQ, Kenny Hall, the Hot Rod Ranch, our three young ladies who held signs in the rain, Norm and Ellen Davis, Alicia Brunson and all who attended and/ or donated to our fund for the new fire station. We ended up getting around $1200.00 after expenses to go towards our fire house. That is better than any of us expected given the weather conditions. The bids for the new Henrieville Fire Station will be opened on the 19th and a contractor should be chosen within a few days of that. The new fire truck will be completed on the 17th of September and it should be here by the end of September. It has to be shipped from Florida after a final inspection. Girl's Camp was excellent this year. So many worked so hard to give the girls a wonderful experience. Kerry Ryan of Boulder headed up the Certifications and the Ward Camp Directors. Cami Mangum, Beth Johnson, and Jill of Escalante, put a lot of time in getting the camp prepared. The overall Theme was M.V.P. (Most Virtuous Persons) and each group took on the name of a favorite football team. Main speakers during the firesides were President Klin Chynoweth, Shawn Chynoweth, and President Alan Torgeson on Tuesday evening. On Wednesday the girls made up skits and presented them to everyone. There was a midnight movie about Tyler Wilkinson a "Heroes Hero" who graduated from Dixie High School and while driving home fell asleep at the wheel and had an accident. He is now a paraplegic who is a hard worker, has high goals and overcame his disabilities. He is now a motivational speaker and is very interesting to listen too. His parents, Mr. and Mirs. Randy Wilkinson also spoke about setting goals and overcoming difficulties. Tyler was an all-stater in football, wrestling and baseball and now he is motivating others to achieve their goals. The girls and their leaders played flag football and had a great time. There was not rain this year and it was beautiful up at Tropic Reservoir. Jean Hall and Kim Johnson gave them wonderful food, so good. A high point in the week was the local ladies who came up to teach the girls how to crochet, Nellie Mecham, Marie Neimann, Lyllian Le Fevre, Nancy Chynoweth, and Mrs. Mc LeMore of Escalante. The girls made bibs and dish cloths to use as a humanitarian project or to give to someone they felt could use them. If anyone was missed we are sorry but we want everyone to know how much we appreciated their efforts for our girls camp and how much fun it was. Norm and Ellen Davis have their Mini Golf Course up and running on top across from Foster's Restaurant. We wish them much success with this endeavor. To the college freshman, have a great week at school. We know you have to go back early to take some preclasses for school. We wish you lots of luck this year.
