PANGUITCH LOOK BEFORE YOU LOCK. Put cell phones, employee badge or lunch on the floor board in front of the child. Get in the habit of always opening the back door of the vehicle every time you reach your destination to ensure no child has been left behind. BE NOSY. Look into vehicles in parking lots to ensure a baby has not been left behind. If an unattended child is seen in a vehicle, call 911 immediately. In addition to the vehicular heat-stroke fatalities, many children are inadvertently injured or killed by a vehicle backing out of or pulling into a driveway. Nationally, there have been 35 front-over and 32 backover fatalities in 2010, with at least three of them occurring in Utah. "Now that school is out and more kids are at home, there is a serious need for parents to be aware of where the children are to assure they are not under foot," said Brooks. "Unfortunately, Utah averages one child being run over every six days, but these accidents can be avoided with a little extra attention from parents, neighbors, friends and kids." Primary Children's also coordinates the Spot the Tot campaign, which encourages drivers, both parents and teens, to take an extra minute to talk all the way around the vehicle before moving it to make sure all children are out of the way. Additional tips include: TURN OFF THE RADIO. When backing up, turning off the radio will allow the driver to hear any dangers that could be behind the vehicle. Rolling down the windows will also help the driver be more attentive to any potential dangers. SUPERVISE. Proper supervision of children is vital, even before the car is put in gear. For example, if children are out playing, ask all of them to stand on the front porch while the vehicle backs out of the driveway. These non-traffic injuries and deaths are not the only preventable injuries kids sustain during the summer. Parents should also assure their children wear bike helmets when cycling, skateboarding, riding an ATV or other similar activities. Children should always wear a life jacket when boating or playing on a boat dock and children in or near water should always be supervised.
