Show The Garfield County Insider April 8, 2010 EverylCounts \it 1444 ' Trust iyourDecisions Don't hit Someone's Proble&Become YoufOwn H-4441,4 I recently got an email from Shari*, a friend of mine. "I am so mad! and frustrated and upset to tears!" it began. Have you ever felt like Shari? I know I have. Shari had gone out of her way for a troop of young boys only to be reprimanded by another leader who yelled, "Why did you do that?! That's not your job!!" Shari was devastated. Her intentions were good, I mean, even excellent. Truly, she didn't do anything wrong. As a matter-of-fact, it was this other leader who hadn't done his job. Basically, he was embarrassed because he hadn't communicated or fulfilled his responsibilities so he chewed out someone who was not only picking up his slack but trying to save him face. "I will take CARE of this MIX UP!!!" he said to Shari ungratefully and angrily. Yet, there wasn't even a mix-up. Shari had communicated with the only other leader --note that all three leaders are of equal stature just in charge of different duties-- who responded to her emails, phone calls and texts, unlike the leader who yelled at her. The two leaders who were communicating had made an executive the lAuGhiNg decision about a hike for the boys (which had to be made by the way and by a certain date). What would you have done? Often times when someone chews us out it is unwarranted and says a whole lot more about that person than it does you. "I'm so upset, I don't know if I should call my upline, or let it slide, and everyone thinks that I'M the Messed up, female Leader," Shari wrote despondently. As-soon-as I received Shari's email; I called her even though it was almost 11 PM. She cried and vented, I listened, we talked, and we even ended up laughing. Toward the end of the call she asked me to email her some of the words I had shared with her on the phone. Here's what I sent Shari: "Remember, what international best-selling author, Dr. Wayne W. Dyer, said, 'What you think of me is none of my business.' Don't even worry about what people are thinking about you. Don't waste any time doing this. It's energy that can be used more productively. And besides, it's his problem, not yours. You went above and beyond. You did excellent. If anything, he should be thanking you. And even though this guy's behavior was jerk-like, have Christ-like Free At-home Preschool Program pOiNt” Tying a Tie love for him anyway. You also do not need to defend your reputation to the parents of the boys. They already know you. They also know this other leader." A woman named Laura Hess once said, "...be true to yourself and stop living to please other people. It's the only way we can be truly contented in our lives." So if you are about to chew someone out and spread rumors about them for your mistake think twice. And if you've been chewed out, talk to a friend and sort it out. Especially since, when something happens unexpectedly, we might initially think our world's coming to an end when, in actuality, it's not as bad as we think. After all, continues Hess, "Your life will be different when you are living in alignment with who you are at your core and not for the benefit of the people around you. Make your choices without fear. Trust yourself and your inner wisdom. Even your unpopular choices will be forgotten by other people in five years!" *Name has been changed. © 2010 Every 1 Counts, LLC. Tuscaloosa The Student Athlete It Makes Sense...By Veda Hale In my long life, there has been several times when suicide of a young person happened rather close. Always when I learned about it the time was accompanied with feelings of disbelief, regret so deep I had a hard time tolerating it, and the wondering the terrible wondering. Could I have...? Why didn't I? Why didn't someone? Well, it happened again. This time, thankfully, not too close to home, not close enough where I was connected enough to have done anything. But if I had been?
