Show Page 4 The Garfield County Insider EXPLORE ESCACANTE SRJAMAIIIIEVIRMNEWS) by Vicki D. Syrett 679-8687 or vickidiane36@hotmail.com Jana exp oreesca ante.com Desert Doc has been out and about and in the last 30 days reports most riders and tour buses are heading to California. Most of those have finally taken retirement and are moving out of harm's way to the Desert Southwest. Cowboy Blues is now open for Lunch — daily 11-2PM. Couple of new things on the new menus. Check them out. Caucus meetings should have happened this week for the election coming up. I was delighted to see there are contests for County Commissioners and School Board Members. That does not mean I favor voting out the incumbents — it means that people are paying attention to government in Garfield County and want to be part of it. That's a good thing! Computer Users Magazine reported that 25.6% of the world population now has access to the internet (360 million people): There are 233,848,493 sites on the internet as of December 2009: 247 billion is the average number of emails sent daily worldwide: 27.3 million Tweets are posted to Twitter daily: And 148,000 computers are made zombies by malware intrusions — daily! If you don't want to purchase McAfee or Norton please go to AVG.com and download their free versions of protection. I get folks in the store all the time that want to know how to save their pictures they've put on their computer that is now infected with a virus and they can't view them or anything. Pray! Keep your software current by downloading the updates - Don't open emails from folks you don't know — and NEVER open attachments from unknown senders. We download our images to external hard drives immediately. Then we burn those files to a CD/DVD for off-site storage. Remember, these are your negatives and the DVD is your shoebox. Don't forget to protect all those precious family photos. If you don't someday either you'll get a virus or the hard drive will fail and they'll be gone. I got the final EA for the Wide Hollow Water Supply Storage Facility Project. The project has been shortened to 10 months and construction will begin mid April, according to the document. I hope you get a chance to visit the Red Canyon Visitor Center from Easter weekend through Memorial Day weekend. Tracy Hassett is the featured artist and his newest images of the Red Canyon, Bryce, and Powell Point will be on display and available to purchase. He's also created cards for every image in his portfolio and they are available at the Center, the Gallery and online at www.escalanteartgallery.com . The new Escalante brochure will be available at the Center beginning this weekend. Until next week - - - HABITS April 1, 2010 The Cub Scouts have been very busy this last little while. The Wolf Leader is asking that each Cub gather a 2 liter pop bottle (empty and clean) with the lid; a small box, (shoe box type); yarn and /or string scraps and a small water bottle. Fun activities ahead. Welcome to Hazer Manning and Kristopher Nez to the Webelos. Congratulations to Annie Syrett for moving into the Young Women. Also to Thorley Johnson for becoming a High Priest. And to Ashlee Adkins who has become the Assistant Young Adults Leader for the Stake. Chance and Jessica Stewart played hosts to David and Christy Peterson this last weekend. They came from Colorado Springs Colorado to visit where David used to live. With them were their two children Keegan and Rowen. They all had a nice visit and attended the Donkey Basketball game together. We send our condolences to Devar & Faye Pollock on the passing of his daughter Linda. You are in our prayers and thoughts. Congratulations to Lonnie Comp who has received his mission call to Calgary Canada. He will go into the MTC on May 26th. Lonnie is the son of Joey and Colleen Comp of Kodachrome and Cannonville. Three of our entries are going to State to compete. Anthony Rose, Carrie and Merrilee Platt (aunt and niece team), and the Girl's Chorus. Good luck to all of you at State. The Bryce Elementary students are being asked to submit a drawing of a mustang for the cover of the yearbook. The books will come out in May and will cost $10.00 each. The picture must be done in dark ink or pencil and be around 7" by 9". They are due this week and we have already received some entries. Their will be prizes for the top artists. There will be winners from each class 1st - 6th. We hope to find place in the yearbook to print all or most of the pictures entered. You will be receiving a coupon to purchase a book from your teacher as it is a good momento to have of your school days. There was a track meet in Kanab this last week and someone mentioned that Tannia Winegar qualified to go to the next leve. Was unable to verify that so there will be more next week. Spring break this week. My goodness it is a long one due to the furlough days built into it. This was done by the school district to take up the slack in the budget. Thanks to Dave Morris the mural in the Elementary Gym is completed and looks absolutely wonderful. Drop in and see it sometime. The PTA is doing a celebration of the Elementary Youth and hoping to get their picture in front of the mural. Hoping to get it into the newspaper.. The fourth through 8th graders are preparing for the District Track meet in May. They spend a lot of time preparing for this event that will be held at Bryce Valley this year. The Bantam Baskeball finished their year with some games at the High School. They had several games and took team pictures. After they all ate and celebrated the season. Thursday the sign up was held for the baseball and softball teams. If you have any questions or would like to join contact Dave Roberts and he can help you. This week will be Spring pictures at 9:00 A.M. on Tuesday. Spring break goes from April 1st through the 5th and then on the 6th will be a furlough day. Classes will resume on April 7th. Easter is mixed up in the middle of all that as well as Conference. SENIOR CITIZEN MENU: Only have last weeks. New one hasn't come yet. You can still call by 10:00 A.M. if you want a meal. 679-8666 |
