Show February 18, 201 Page Ev Counts Even in the Gutter Look to'the Stars El, 67:4 ,411 Times are still tough for a lot of people. Our economy is uncertain. Some people have sunk into deep depression. Others cannot see a way out and of those who are currently employed some have even received notice that in 30, 60 or 90 days more positions will be cut from the company they work for. This is what a friend of mine, who works at a motorcycle corporate office in California, heard last week. The main reason he took a position with that company is because his wife has had cancer three times and they needed medical insurance. When I spoke to his wife, who was in tears, she relayed to me that's why she didn't return my call. And just yesterday, a former colleague of mine, a college professor, emailed me that his job was terminated due to budget cuts, yet he was a state director of a university and had been there for years! He was like a landmark at that university yet, he wrote, "I'm looking for work." I was dumbfounded. He's in his late 50s and sometimes, unfortunately, people in this age bracket and older have to deal with things like age discrimination. So, just when you think your employment might be se- if.A4,41€4,4 cure, as I thought for sure with my college professor friend, that is not always the case. Which brings me to faith and hope which are crucial at all times, but especially in these times. In Hebrews 11:1 we are told, "Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen." And someone once said, "Many of the great achievements of the world were accomplished by tired and discouraged men who kept on working." Thus, you must never give up, no matter what your hard times are especially because these hard times, as I heard from my new friend, Jeremy Johnson, an Internet entrepreneur from Washington County, who will soon be leaving on his third relief tour to Haiti, are actually blessings. Let me repeat that, and I've written about it before, hard times = blessings. Look to your hard times and let them make you. In doing so, think about the conversations you have with yourself. For instance, do you say, "Why me?" or "Why not me?" What about, "This is a curse?" or "This is a blessing?" Or even, "We're never blessed?" versus, "We're always blessed." Our con- versations, or self-talk, and even our mindset can make or break us and can ultimately impact almost every part of our lives including our relationships, our health and whether or not someone wants to employ us. The good news, there is always good news, is that it's not too late to change your thinking, attitude, selftalk, and mindset, for the better. Trust me, when you do you will be happier and so will the people that live and work with you. Subsequently, consider also the words that Irish poet and novelist Oscar Wilde shared with us, "We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars." We all feel the impacts of these hard times in some fashion or another, yet some of us still see stars and believe in hope and faith. For the livelihood and well-being of yourself and others, always be a star-gazer no matter the circumstances. © 2010 Every 1 Counts, LLC. All rights reserved. A few weeks ago we had just gotten into bed when I noticed my wife taking an extra amount of time smoothing out her nightgown, then pulling up the covers and smoothing them out, and then finally going to work smoothing out her pillow. After watching all this activity for a while, I finally asked, "What are you doing?" "Well," she replied, "I don't like to sleep on wrinkles." I replied. "At our age, how can you avoid it?" Parking Lot Rules (How many of these can you relate to?) Rule #1 When waiting for a parking spot, stop in the middle of the road, don't signal, and orient your car diagonally to prevent others from passing. Rule #2 Always park on the lines, taking up as many spots as possible. Diagonal parking is preferred. Rule #3 In a crowded parking lot, if you find a spot and have the opportunity to pull through to an adjacent one, drive up half way and stop on the line, taking both. Rule #4 As you pull into a spot, if you see that the space ahead of you is empty and you see another driver signaling to take it, pull thru and take it from him. Rule #5 Always park close enough to the adjacent car so that the other driver must grease up with Vaseline to squeeze into his/her car. Rule #6 When getting out of your car, hit the adjacent vehicle with your door really hard. If you leave a dent, wait for a car, which is painted the same color as yours, to drive down the aisle looking for a place to park. Then back out, giving up your spot like "Mr. Good Guy" and park somewhere else. Rule #7 When driving through the parking lot, ignore the painted lanes and drive diagonally from one end to another at a high rate of speed. Rule #8 When stopped in front of a store and waiting for a friend/relative to make a purchase, make sure that you are stopped in the middle of the road. The same rules applies to picking-up and discharging passengers. Rule #9 When a vehicle from the opposite direction is signaling and waiting for a parking space, position your car so that you are in his way and let the car behind you take it. Rule #10 If you don't see a speed limit sign posted in the malls parking lot, there isn't any! Rule #11 When walking back to your car, if you notice other shoppers walking past your car to get to theirs, press the buttons on your keychain remote so that your car's alarm makes a sudden loud "BLOOP BLEEP" that scares the mess out of them. Rule #12 - If the vehicle in front of you stops to let a pedestrian cross or another vehicle turn, pull into the lane of opposite traffic and attempt to pass him. Rule #13 deleted...for those who are superstitious Rule #14 When exiting a shopping center into a busy road, exit through the narrow "ENTER ONLY" driveway, stick the nose of the car into traffic, and wait. Rule #15 When driving through a parking lot with alternating one-way aisles and angled parking spots, drive the wrong way. Then when you see a parking space, take 20 minutes to do a 12-point turn to pull into it. Rule #16 Always leave your shopping cart behind or tightly between parked vehicles. - - - - - - - - - Office Irritant Dave irritated everyone in our office. Whether it was the tone of his voice or his condescending attitude, we all steered clear. He must have suspected he was annoying because he asked a co-worker, "Why does everybody take an instant dislike to me?" Larry responded, "It saves time." Speak to Me Six months after a waiter died, his widow went to see a medium, who promised she would contact the man in the great beyond. During the séance, the widow was sure she saw her husband standing in the corner, dressed in his waiter's outfit. "Arnold!" she cried. "Come closer and speak to me!" A ghostly voice drifted from the corner ... "I can't. It's not my table." Truth in Advertising Driving along a country road, I ignored a Bridge Out sign and continued on. But in a few miles I came to a stop: the road was completely barricaded. So I turned around and retraced my route. That's when I saw this sign on the back of the first: "It was, wasn't it?" - - an ititc Dru GOOD NEIGHBOR PHARMACY' FEBRUARY 2010 FRIENDLY SERVICE I 1111 RODUC Chloraseptic PreSun 3.5 oz. 6 oz. 799 ULTRA w. 599 Pain Relieving Patch 40 ct. While your at it, dump out all the garbage too including that Wendy's or McDonald's bag sitting in the back seat from breakfast.
