A<\ It If your father had a heart attack, but survived and then asked you to give up your career two states away to come back to southern Utah to take over the family business, would you? Well, that's exactly what R. Neil Walter, 34, of Santa Clara, did in a matter of three weeks and without hesitation. "It was quite a sacrifice to him because he gave up a very lucrative career working for a huge corporation with lots of opportunity," said Neil's father Mark Walter. It meant that my son truly cared about his father and family more than he did his own self." When Walter, 34 --named after an uncle who was killed in a car accident -- was growing up in St. George, his mother, Valene (Val), knew early on that her eldest son was destined to be a leader just from the simple act of him taking hold of his sister Crystal's hand while leading her over to a neighbors. "He's always been kind, generous, caring, and thoughtful," she said. Later Walter honed work ethic skills working on his family's ranch in Garfield County. "I've have been forever involved in ranching or the agricultural industry," said Walter. "It's a very big part of my life." Walter went on to earn the rank of eagle scout, become his LDS seminary president to over a 1,000 students, an assistant to two LDS mission presidents during his mission to Atlanta, GA, a member of the Graduate Student Assembly at Carnegie Mellon University, and chair of the New Hire Network when employed at ConocoPhillips, to name a few of his leadership endeavors. But Walter's latest undertaking, when he's not being husband to wife, Michelle, or dad to his four children, teaching real estate and en- 44, trepreneurial finance, business statistics and economics at Dixie State College, or running a brokerage firm in St. George? Republican candidate for United States Congress Utah's 2nd Congressional District challenging Morgan Philpot, a former state lawmaker, for the Republican nomination. With the backing of former State Representative, State Senator, and Garfield County Commissioner, Tom Hatch, Walter states on his website, Neil for Congress (www.neilforcongress. corn), why he's running for Congress, "The recession has been difficult for everyone. It lasted longer and was deeper than most of us expected. My students at Dixie State asked hard questions about how the recession started and how we get out. As I thought about their questions and began to look toward the future, I realized that someone with my background could be helpful in addressing the financial issues in Washington DC. We need more people with strong financial backgrounds and entrepreneurial experience." "I'm a regular guy," he adds. "I'm a partner in a small business and my job is to help small businesses." "Picking up on things and understanding what's happening in government is almost second nature," said Mark Walter. "He sees through all the smoke screens people put up to divert attention to other things." Adds Hatch, "I've had an opportunity to meet with Neil and discuss with him his vision and what changes we need in this country. I enthusiastically support him in his attempt to unseat Jim Matheson." Walter told The Spectrum recently, "In years past, my lack of political experience would have been a real liability for me...now it's an asset." "The tipping point for Jim and Missy ".41fIrkiVo -19 7 me was realizing that the current leadership in Washington DC was saying they wanted economic growth and job creation but their policies were discouraging investors, businesses, and consumers. Even after all of this, I expected someone else to get into the race who would carry the economic torch--until I realized that this time that person is me. Honestly, politics has never been part of my career ambitions. I would never have committed to run for office without the encouragement and support of my wife every step of the way." "He tells the people he works with that they can do the impossible and then he works with them, builds them and shows them how," says brother Jon Walter. "It builds their character and their ability to perform." "He cares deeply for our country. He's a great patriot," said mom Val. "I really believe that he can rise to the challenge and make a difference." "We need to put our country on a solid financial footing and move toward an innovative and dynamic economy that competes aggressively in world markets," said Walter. "We have all had to reevaluate our needs and adjust our priorities because of the recent recession. It is time to put this country's house in order as well." "It will be a big mistake if people don't look at him seriously and really look at his abilities and what he can offer the citizens of the second congressional district," said Mark Walter. Supporter and Franklin Covey founder, author and lecturer, Hyrum Smith said, "I'm actively endorsing Neil Walter in his bid for United States Congress. Neil has developed a financial understanding that very few people have. We need somebody like him to replace the thinking that is going on in Washington DC. I would strongly recommend that you take a good look at Neil. Please vote for him." French emperor Napoleon Bonaparte said, "A leader is a dealer in hope." This is what our country needs right now. A Guessing Gamen TV Repair To pass the time while our plane was being de-iced, the flight attendants played a trivia game with the passengers. They asked us to guess the total number of years the three of them had worked for the airlines. Aft- r an attendant collected our estimates, we heard the announcement: "The correct answer is 26 years. For the two people who came closest with 28 years, we have prizes. And for the passenger in seat 12F who guessed 85 years, would you please step off the plane once we are airborne." Need Glasses? Domestically Challenged THE INSIDER It Makes Sense...By Veda Hale Turmeric Why are there so few cases of cancer and dementia and other terrible conditions in India? According to some seemingly wise sources it is because of the high consumption of turmeric, which is the main ingredient of Currey. I did some research with that wonderful "jennie" that most of us have at our beck and call and in my world is named "google" and decided turmeric was sure worth the inclusion in my diet. However, the capsules seem the easiest way to go, as I haven't got a taste desire for dishes made with enough of the stuff to do much good, at this late date in my life. It is supposed to be an anti inflammatory thing that can shut off the triggers that cause cells to turn cancerous. It also helps any other condition that is connected with inflammation. Arthritis for one. I have been interested in the nutritional approach to health for most of my life, ever since Dr. Duggan cured, with an iron supplement, my desire to eat dirt. But it is confusing the many things that are supposed to be good for this or that. One wishes there were just one or at least just a few supplicants that it would be easy to take and not too expensive and then go on about life learning about other things. I just think I have that figured out for me and then something new is touted as "good". Another new one popular now is plenty of vitamin D, preferably D3. (Oh yes, now it isn't just the simple letter for the vitamin, but most have some number connected to confuse us.} So this winter I guess I'll continue to eat a lot of garlic, turmeric in a capsule form, a good multiple vitamin, fish oil, vitamin D3, and finish up some of the other bottles sitting around with different combination of what is supposed to be good for me, and then settle down to painting pictures. What about you? P.S. Since I wrote this a while ago, I have been taking Turmeric now for two months. I absolutely do have more energy. I can get through the day without a nap! Those who know me will know how long it has been since I had much energy and could do that. Also, those signs of allergies, like sneezing and runny nose, has almost gone away. Hummmm. I believe my little daughter wants a pair of glasses. I don't know why she does. Perhaps glasses are now "cool" to have in school? But though she sees just fine, she still says she needs glasses. I took her to the eye doctor just to check it out though. She was asked to read the bottom row of letters on the eye chart.
