Sevy are celebrating her 85th birthday with her on Monday, December 7, 2009. One Mom's most vivid memories of her youth was on her 17th birthday, when the mood of her birthday party was dampened by the news of the bombing of Pearl Harbor. This was a sobering day for our country she recalls. After she graduated from High School in Panguitch, she and her friend Bell Boyter went to California and worked at the Douglas plant, building B-25 Mitchell Bombers that was used in the war effort. They became part of the original workforce known as"Rosie the Riveter". She has many memories and stories of this experience and has always felt that she contributed to the war efforts. She is surrounded and loved by her family of 5 children: Richard, Lorraine (Richard), Jolene (Richard), Arlene (Barry) and Ken (Annette). She has 18 Grandchildren (and their spouses), 37 Great-Grandchildren and 1 Great-Great Granddaughter. Her loving companion of almost 60 years, Harold Sevy passed away in April 2009. She would really enjoy a phone call or visit from her many friends and acquaintances. Toys for Tots Toys for Tots is currently accepting donations of new, unwrapped toys for Christmas. She was born February 4, 1917 in Bloomington, Idaho to John Mahonri and Ida May Patterson Ward. She married Dee Fred Houston Sr. on October 29, 1941 in the Salt Lake Temple. He preceded her in death. Dort (her Bear Lake nickname) never lost her love for Bear Lake, Idaho where she grew up and was her father's helper on the farm. She grew up with 186 first cousins who stayed close until their deaths. She attended BYU, taught school in Bloomington, and then moved to Panguitch as a teacher. She graduated from BYU then continued her education almost yearly, but enrolled only in those classes which interested her. Dorothy loved teaching all children, but especially teaching her family of boys in Cub Scouts, Scouts, 4-H or any of the activities in which they were interested. She was even called by her bishop to be the North Ward Scout Master for a short period of time. All her boys were Eagle Scouts and most of her grandsons and many Panguitch boys received their Eagles through her influence. She enjoyed painting ceramics and later pictures, playing the piano for herself or her class only and quilting. Her interests were always with young people. She was involved in Young Women's on the LDS Ward or Stake level for many years. She spent years as a Merit Badge Counselor, and doing road shows. When Dot (nickname in Panguitch) moved to Panguitch, she adopted Garfield County as her home. She was an avid historian who loved the people and stories of the area. As a member of Daughters of the Utah Pioneers and Business and Professional Women she dedicated a great deal of time to community work. While helping in her husband's mercantile, she became acquainted with most of the people of Garfield County and was a friend to all. She loved her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren who will remember her as a very, very special Grandma. I think it's a base canard! I know, 'cause there's a glacier forming right out in my back yard. It's all the spare water from Fish Creek, which flows from off the Boulder, And you gotta know that glaciers don't grow unless it's getting colder. The bulls that live in the pasture don't think it's too darn nice. They gotta be careful from falling down when they wander out on that ice. I remember two years ago, my back yard glacier flowed, All the way down the meadow and over the Teesdale Road. It ain't the world's biggest glacier. I know that's what you're thinking, But this little bugger is growing each day, and the rest of them all are shrinking. So don't tell me global warming! I don't believe it, one particle. I got a glacier in my back yard that's positively Antarcticle.
