Show EXPLORE] ESCAIIANTEI RIALI-TuWM jana@exploreescalante.com The Christmas Spirit is sponsored by the Escalante Lions Club. Located at the Pioneer Visitor Center on Main Street, the club decorates the cottage and the tree. It didn't do well on the top this year, thus the sign. I happened to be up when the girl's basketball team bus rolled into town behind the state highway plows. It was a long, sleepy ride home. It was a hectic weekend in Escalante. Boys Basketball was in Richfield and a number of folks traveled with the team. The Girls Basketball team went to Kanab and I happened to see them arrive home following the plows, early Sunday morning. Girls home games start in December and the Boys in January. Wrestling was in Parawan. The tournament this past weekend brought eight teams to Parowan . Bret Brooks and Neil Owens both took 4th in their weight classes. Good Job! In the meantime, Wrestling tournaments give us Moqui stars. The tournament this past weekend brought eight teams to Parowan . Bret Brooks and Neil Owens both took 4th in their weight classes. Good Job! Snow everywhere, but we should have a break for a while. According to MSNBC, "Parts of New England also girded themselves for bone-chilling wind gusts and snow accumulations of up to a foot by the end of the day. 'It's horrible out there,' said Todd Lane, an assistant manager of a convenience store in Des Moines, where several inches of new snow was reported overnight. Although business was fairly normal overnight, it nearly all came from snow plow drives — most looking for coffee and energy drinks." Don't forget to write and send your comments on the EA for Wide Hollow. They are due Dec. 23rd. We get folks from all over the world visiting Escalante. Many of those that stop at the Gallery are interested in the area, demographics, history, and geography. Many times we get a chance to talk about various books written about the area. Sometimes someone will bring up one we haven't read. That was the case when talking with folks from Wisconsin. "The Proper Edge of the Sky" by Edward A. Geary was unknown to us. Both of us have read it and there's an excellent chapter on Escalante and the Grand Staircase. This year Desert Doc talked with lots of folks from foreign countries. We had visitors sign our guest book from 34 states, 8 countries, 3 Canadian Provinces, and 31 Utah cities. Winter Hours - The Circle D Motel and Eatery is closed from Dec 14th through Jan 12th. The Eatery will reopen Feb 5th and have specials for Superbowl Sunday. Georgie tells me she'll be closed from Christmas to New Years but open January. Watch for her closure in February. The folks at the Prospector Restaurant told me they plan on being open the winter for locals. Cowboy Blues let me know that they'll close Jan. 1 1 th and reopen the first of February. Watch for their flyer for exact dates. The Loop has their winter hours posted, as do the gas stations. The Outfitters winter hours are 10 -5 Tues — Sat. And Winter Hours at the Gallery Mon- Sat 9-5. Today is a sad day for many of us as we report on the passing of a very dear person. Bonnie Stewart McArthur passed away last week after a long and courageous battle with cancer. She leaves behind her loving husband Ty McArthur and two small children. Bonnie is the daughter of Duane and Carol Stewart of Tropic. We will miss you Bonnie and send your family our love and prayers. Another person that will be missed by many is Dorothy Houston of Panguitch. I remember going into their store many times and exchanging a few laughs and stories about being teachers. She was a fun lady to talk with and always had a good work for you. She is now busy teaching in Heaven and we want her family to know we have them in our thoughts and prayers. I need to mention again the passing of Ed Littlefield. As dense as I can be at times I totally forgot just who his family is here in the Bryce Area. His mother is Agnes Littlefield of Tropic and he is a brother to Marion Littlefield of Tropic and has a lot of other family members that I just did not make the connection with. I apologize to the family and want you to know that we have you in our thoughts and prayers as well. Tickets for a hand quilted queen size quilt and a 2506 Weatherby Rifle with scope and hard case are still available at the Bryce Valley High School, the BV Elementary School, the South Central office in Tropic and the Tropic Town Office. The tickets are $1.00 each or 6 for $5.00 and the drawing will be held at the girl's home basketball game halftime on December 22nd. All prceeds will go toward a "Safe Route to School" sidewalk on Bryce Way in Tropic so our children can get to school safely. Be sure to pick up your tickets for this worthy cause and any of the locations mentioned. Your help is appreciated. The Tropic Heritage Museum, now being organized, is looking for good pioneer artifacts to be displayed at the Heritage Center. If anyone has a pioneer artifact that they would like to loan to the Museum, please contact Annette Chynoweth at 679-8755 by December 31st. Most artifacts will be locked into display cases and all will be protected by security and fire suppression systems. Thanks for your help. Helen Willis of Henrieville went to Cedar City to visit granddaughter, Triessa Hepworth and her two daughter, Whitni and Mardi. They went shopping and attended the Festival of Trees in Cedar. Helen said it was just beautiful. They had a great time. Henrieville Town is planning as Winter Wonderland Party on December 19th at 6:00 P.M. at the church. Lots of good things happening for this party. The Henrieville Young Men and Young Women are going Christmas Caroling on Tuesday to spread the cheer of Christmas. Is everyone enjoying the snow yet7 I 717 Boy when we finally get it we get a lot don't we? It is a good thing we need it. A bunch of ladies joined together to make a fun and easy pillow and some delicious candy to celebrate Christmas coming. Gayle Moore, Sandy Johnson, Helen Willis, Billie Sudweeks, Anita Fletcher, Anna Dunham, Jacque Slack, Elaine Haas, and Vicki Syrett enjoyed the afternoon of visiting and crafting together with delicious food as well as they each made a present for the holidays. The Tropic Ward Relief Society Christmas Social was superb. Well done ladies on a delicious dinner and a beautiful program of song and story. It was a great evening and everyone who attended seemed to be having a great time together. Well Jim and Mikki Shakespear and Kyle and Chelsey Tichenor are now happily married and on the way to a new life together. We wish them the best of luck in their new future together. I want to share a little poem my mother used to MAJOR WINTER STORM CAUSES OUTAGES TO SOUTHERN SYSTEM Garkane Energy Customers in Northern Arizona, and in Kane and Garfield Counties experienced power outages Monday night and early Tuesday morning, December 7 and 8, 2009 due to heavy wet snow in the south, which blanketed the area. All grades in the Elementary School in Tropic are participating with bird feeders. The NHA from Bryce Canyon NP with Marilyn Bulkley and Farah are in charge. Everyon is very enthusiastic with this project. The students have been studying and memorizing the different birds in our area. They have also learned to name and their classifications as well. Some of the classes have done artwork around the bird theme and have made Christmas ornaments to hang on their trees. It has been a great project for all the students at BV Elementary and their teachers. The annual Christmas Caroling around the tree in the hall begins this Tuesday morning at the Elementary School. It is fun to watch and listen to the enthusiasm of the students as they participate in this sing time.
