That meeting was in response to the direction that the federal government is taking us with regard to fiscal irresponsibility, anti-first and second amendment stance, confiscatory taxes, redistribution of wealth, and refusal to enforce our immigration laws. This list is by no means complete and has grown longer with the attempt by the current administration to destroy our health care system by imposing a government run system. During subsequent meetings we discussed the origin of the Constitution, the health care threat, how we can become politically active, and how we can join with other like minded groups. We are not alone as evidenced by the country wide tea parties, the meetings during August largely protesting the health care proposals, and the huge gathering in Washington DC on September 12. Our monthly meetings have been held in a local restaurant, and ranch conference center. Our next tea party will take place in Panguitch Utah and be hosted by Tom Hatch a former member of the Utah state Legislature. We welcome anyone who would like to contribute their thoughts and ideas to our group or would just like to listen to our presentations and conversations. This is also an opportunity to meet neighbors and make new friends and make a difference. Our guest speaker, Billy Conn, will present” A Call to Action”. The meeting will take place on Thursday, October 15, 2009 at 7pm. The location is: 2222 River Lane, Panguitch, Utah 84759 If you have questions contact: Pat Cooney 690-1072 or Neil Sutherland 690 -1336 or Bill Doughty 590-1633 Cowboy Heritage Festival and 4-H Working Ranch The long waited Annual Cowboy Heritage Festival and 4-H Working Ranch Horse Gathering is here! Success for the 2009 Escalante Canyons Art Festival Success for the 2009 Escalante Canyons Art Festival/ Everett Ruess Days can be measured in many ways. The Plein Aire Artists’ Competition increased from 74 to 94 artists and from 86 to 111 entries over 2008. These artisans came from diverse locales: 18 from Garfield County; many others from throughout Utah; 13 from AZ.; 7 from CO; 5 from NM; 4 from 10; 3 from CA; 2 from KS; and, one each from CT, MN, NV, PA, HI and even Germany. Also participating were six students from Southern Utah University’s Art Department as endowed by an ECAF scholarship fund. Judges Donna Poulton, author and affiliate with the University of Utah, and Alan Petersen of the Museum of Northem Arizona, awarded Best of Show accolades to Tryntje Seymour of Salisbury CT for her charcoal entry and Herb White of Cedar City UT for his oils’ category entry. Awards of Merit winners included works by Ken Baxter, Salt Lake City and Carolyn Dauily, Crestone CO for their Oils and Larry Granston, Boulder CO and Megan Marshall-Nelson, Cedar City for their Mixed-Media pieces. Honorable Mention acknowledgements were garnered by Charles Geary, Santa Fe, Travis Humphreys, Cedar City, Sid Ostergaard, Heber UT, Sandi Snead, La Sal UT, and Kiel Whitaker, Santa Clara UT for Oils, and Janet Kupchick, Santa Monica CA, Scotty Mitchell, Boulder UT, Betsey Nelson, Flagstaff, Jeff Potter, Alameda NM, and Linda Sherman, Flagstaff for their Mixed-Media works. Sara Straw, Aurora UT was chosen by her peers to receive the Artists’ Award and Lynn Griffin, Escalante, was voted the Peoples’ Choice Award. The Plein Aire Silent Auction sales were less than 2008, yet, “not bad”, when considering current economic conditions. In addition to the Art component, other aspects of the Festival reflected success in the form of some 450- 500 registered atttendees at the various Speakers’ presentations. The Friday morning Everett Ruess Chautauqua filled all seats and had many standing listeners for the three-hour panel discussion. Numerous visitors ambled throughout the Festival Plaza between the Exhibit Hall, Vendor areas and Entertainment Stage, enjoying the beautiful weather, visiting with friends, being entertained by local talent, shopping and relaxing. Many diners supported the Potato Valley Lion’s club dinners both Friday and Saturday evenings. So, was the 2009 ECAF a success? If we guage the merits based on participation, pleasure, and enthusiasm, YES! “A good time was had by all!” The ECAF committee and Envision Escalante, the festival’s sponsor, extend sincere appreciation to ALL participants, attendees, patrons, sponsors and volunteers for their dynamic and financial contributions to the success of the Sixth Annual Escalante Canyons Art Festival. Plans for 2010 will begin soon and new ideas, energy and most definitely enthusiastic additional committtee members are invited to become a art of the future growth and successes of this event.
