Show The Garfield County Insider Page 4 September 3, 2009 IN OUR TOWN Explore Escalante jana@exploreescalante.com September – National Potato Month (Bubba Spud loves that); Hug a Texas Chef Month (when Circle D opens about the 14th you can do that); Women of Achievement Month (Ever listed the number of women business owners in Escalante?). We’ve seen a number of motorcycles this year. Doc went to a meeting not long ago and wanted to share the various names the motorcycle communities from other countries have for Highway 12. The New Zealanders call it the Devils Highway; Irish call it the Banshees Highway; the French call it the Dinosaurs Highway; Swiss and Scandinavian – The highway of Time; and the Swede and Norway call it the Vikings Highway. Germans are by far the largest number of foreign motorcycles visitors, with France second and Canada third. In the US Californians are #1, Texans #2 and my home state of Kansas 3rd. It’s always fun to track where folks come from. At the end of each year we tally the states, Canadian provinces and countries that have signed our guest book. And about Scenic Byway 12 – John Holland, the Byway Coordinator, sent out an e-mail inviting folks to recommend people for the three (3) at-large positions on the Scenic Byway Committee at their October meeting in Torrey. If you’re interested, you can e-mail John at jholland. sb12@gmail.com.They’ll be electing all new officers, including chair and vicechair. I’m assuming Secretary will be open as well. Full Harvest Moon the 5th. The feed must be low for the Coyotes; they were wandering around town the other night. A neighbor stopped by to let me know that the EA on Wide Hollow Reservoir for the New Escalante Irrigation District should be out October 15th. He met with the Engineers and that was the information they provided. By the time this gets to your mailbox I will have talked with the folks at the Army Corps of Engineers and should have information from their viewpoint. I was going to give you the whole scoop on the Clinic in Wayne County. I have most of what I need, but still waiting a callback from Wayne County on funding. I haven’t forgotten. Town has been quiet while our folks take a last minute trip out of town, shopping, to the lake, etc. And we’re a little far from Park City for a last overnight trip. But things should start jumping soon, and the art festival is on track for the 25th. Syrett 679-8687 or vickidiane36@hotmail.com The Relief Society Presidency of the Tropic Ward would like to thank everyone who participated in and attended the Mother/ Daughter/Grandmother/ Granddaughter picnic. Good food and entertainment was the theme of the evening with a great turnout. Carl and Mary-Miller Boyd recently enjoyed a visit from Don and Reece Carter of Bowling Green, Kentucky. Their son, Pleas, married the Boyd’s daughter, Katherine. The carters enjoyed returning to Bryce Canyon National Park, then hiking in Kodachrome. They were delighted by the Bar-G Wranglers at Ebenezer’s Barn and then Reexe went to quild guild with Mary-Miller while Carl and Don were joined by Max Stewart for a boy’s night out at the Pizza Place. The visit ended with a trip to Salt Lake City where they toured Temple Square followed by the Tabernacle Choir rehearsal. That and a Tabernacle Organ recital were the hightlights of the trip for the Carters. The Steve Clark family, Steve, VerJean, Sheena, and Derrick and Ashley with daughter, Shaylynn all went back to Connecticut to visit Cary and Cindy Clark. They visited the new Yankee Stadium where they watched the Yankee’s beat the Red Sox four times. Steve had also been inside the old Yankee’s stadium and it was great. They then went to Gettysburg where they all spent three days and this was a dream fulfilled for Steve as he has dreamed of going here his whole life. He is a history buff and this brought it all to life for him and he thoroughly enjoyed every minute there. There are over 1500 markers on Gettsyburg that take you from place to place. It is a ten square mile battlefield. Right next to the battlefield is the D. D. Eisenhower farm. It is the only house that he and Mamie, his wife, ever owned. Very impressive. From there the group went to Washington D. C. for three days where they visited the Smithsonian Museum. They walked the Mall past the Reflection Pond to the World War II Memorial, and then to Washington’s Monument. From there they saw Lincoln’s Memorial, the VietNam Memorial Wall (Steve had spent two years in VietNam) where they spent hours looking over the wall. They went to the White House, to the Capitol building, Jefferson Memorial, Iwo Jima Marine Memorial, Arlington National Cemetary and to President John F. Kennedy’s memorial. They saw the Tomb of the Unknown Soldiers and watched the changing of the Guard while there. The family then traveled up the East Coast Highway through Maryland, Virginia, Delaware, New Jersey, New York and back to Connecticut. Steve said this was sixteen-seventeen days of wonder and good family time. Congratulations to Darren and Kalena KIlfoyle on the birth of their beautiful little daughter, Karena Rose who weighed in at 4 lbs. and 8 oz. She is healthy and strong and was born on Friday August 21st. She is a darling little button, very cute!! She joins her brothers at home who are delighted to have a baby sister. Henrieville has a new Elders Quorum Presidency. Carson Johnson has been called to be the President with Duztin Sorenson as his Counselor and Cal Chynoweth as his Secretary. Congratulations on the new callings. Congratulations also go out to Kimberly Rose who has been hired to be the Head Start Teacher in Panguitch. Good going Kimberly and good luck!! Jim Clark was the speaker in Henrieville today with Sandy Johnson playing a beautiful number, “More Holiness Give Me”, on the piano. She is very talented and we love to hear her play. Reading Assessments are over at the elementary school so now it is back to normal classroom learning for the students. Yay!! Jim Shakespear is home from his mission and he spoke in Sacrament Meeting in Tropic today along with Monte’ Twitchell. The Young Men and Young Women’s choir sang a beautiful song for the meeting. Our condolences go out to Glade Stewart, formerly of Tropic, whose wife, Carolyn passed away. Carolyn was originally from Taylorsville where she was Carolyn Taylor. We want the family to know we have them in our prayers and thoughts at this time. Jessica Stewart is now registering students for the Dance Academy. Classes taught are ballet, hip hop, and alos tumbling. They will be taught at the BVHS Auditorium. The classes begin on Wednesday the 9th of September(after Labor Day). This will be Jessica’s fifth year of teaching dance here in Bryce Valley area. THere will be a Christmas Recital as well as an end of the year recital in April. She appreciates the support in the past. Call now to sign up at 679-8495 or 691-0738. Has anyone been keeping an eye out for Mars in the sky next to the moon. I saw it once when it first started showing up but haven’t seen it lately. Hurry and look or it will be gone. Closes to earth in thousands maybe millions of years. The three and four year old Pre-School starts this week with teachers Tammy Jessen and Dianna Leslie. A good learning time for the young ones. Lloyd and Michelle Mathews held their wedding reception this last week-end. Congratulations to the couple. Lloyd’s brother Trevor was able to come down from Montana to spend a few days with the family. He is doing well up there and is in the same area as Dustin Leslie and Ryan Moore(will be) so hope he gets to say hi to our Missionaries. The Bryce Valley High School Volley Ball team is working very hard. They are playing good ball in spite of a loss to Escalante last week. They are very talented and dedicated girls. They have played North Sevier, Parowan a win, and Escalante. Their coach is Dana Courtright who encourages the girls to play ball, have fun, and smile. She says they are growing in leaps and bounds and their skills are improving as they learn. Keep up the great work girls. Arthur and Vicki Syrett attended church in Annabella today to hear their daughter-in-law, Debbie Jensen speak about her missionary sons as it was Moms of Missionaries Sacrament meeting. All the mothers spoke about their missionaries and it was great. The favorite part was hearing son David and Grandson Joshuan sing together, “A Song of Testimony”. My favorite. The smoke coming from the fires on the I-15 side of the mountains, New Harmony I believe, was so bad that going through Piute County you could not see the mountains and definitelly could not see Piute Reservoir. It was horrific. I understand some home have been lost and that is scary. We wish the people well who are in the path of the fire. Keep safe and our fire-fighters too. The sun was blood red. Very pretty and you could look right at it because their was so much smoke. Now that is something in itself. Would rather not see that if it is going to cost lose of homes, property and hopefully not lives. Congratulation to Maggie Syrett who advanced into Young Women. Just a reminder of Cub Scout meeting times and places. Wolf Den will meet on Tuesdays right after school in the BVE Art Room. Bear Den will meet on Tuesdays also in the BVHS Library right after school. The Webelos will meet at 3:30 P.M. in the Tropic Scout Building. Everyone is encouraged to wear their uniforms and bring their books with them and to work on skills at home with their parents. Steven Littlefield is now stationed at Camp Pendleton in California. He is doing okay and would love some letters from home to cheer him up. He will be there until the end of October. Haven’t received the Senior Citizen menu yet. It will be in next week. |
