SMOKEBACK MOUNTAIN I understand Wayne County Utah has a new, unique farming plan going. Up on the side of the Boulder Mountain a cannabis field was growing. Thousands and thousands of cute green shoots, there in the primeval wood, Insuring that a walk in the forest could be healthy, or it could be good. I guess that the plants were destroyed when discovered. They were tiny, with little green tips. If they had survived they might have provided some tokers with many fun trips. Hopefully some of the plantlings mature, hidden away in the wood. Perhaps there’s a small forest fire this fall, and the buds get to smoldering good. Let’s say that I end up downwind from this blaze. Wouldn’t it be just ducky, If I take a great, deep healthy breath, and kind of wind up getting lucky? Poems written by Ray Conrad www.raymondconrad.com Councilman Graham reported on the Filtration House. The Council approved purchasing ½ Acre of land from Lenza Wilson for the Filtration House to be located next to the water tanks on the hill. In addition, Lenza will work with the City to provide utility easement for power to the filter system whenever needed. The well house, on property off Highway 12, will consist of a little larger concrete block building to secure equipment within the terms of the City’s current lease for that location. Desert Doc gave me a whole list of people from various places, and I’ll be darnned if I can find it. Sorry Doc. Needless to say, there are a ton of motorcycles in town this year and more arriving every day. Watch for them as you travel. On Thursday, June 11th Tracy will take me to Brian Head for a meeting of the Community Impact Board. City Treasurer Ronda and I will be presenting an update on the City projects funded by them thus far and a request for $30,000 matching funds to have the City Engineer create a Park Master Plan. That would provide time for public meetings and feedback for improvements to Town Center Park, Mohr Christensen Park, the Rodeo Grounds and the Little League Field at the High School. It will provide an opportunity for folks to talk about how they’d like to see the parks used and what equipment should be there. The final designs can then be used to apply for funding for the improvements. The whole process will take 1-2 years. But it’s a start. The Gallery will be closed the 11th. Until next week - - - - - Bryce Valley Area News by Vicki D. Syrett 679-8687 or vickidiane36@hotmail.com Alma and Anita Fletcher traveled down to Mesa Arizona to be there for the blessing of their new little grandson, Luke Alan Fletcher. He is the son of Robert and Shelly Fletcher. Congratulations to Phyllis Beard. She is now Phyllis Jones. She married Richard Jones in the Manti Temple last week and we are very excited for the newlyweds. Our best wishes to the Jones and a very bright future for you both. Glenna Fletcher took her 4H girls to Posey Lake last week for Day Camp. They are called the Awesome Sewing Club. Members are Emily Jessen, Erin Roundy, Taylor Nelson, and Brianne Nelson. They all learned about basic camping skills at Posey Lake. The girls have also been learning how to use a sewing machine and make projects on them. They are planning on putting their articles in the Garfield County Fair and are very excited about that. Two new members are coming into the club, they are Liza Platt and Dannica Rose. Sound Like fun everyone. Monte and Rita Twitchell came back from Las Vegas with two little granddaughters to stay for a week. Hannah and Mallory are the daughters of Brit and Karleena Twitchell. Brit works in Law Enforcement and Karleena is becoming a Nurse and had to have some training so Grandma Rita took the girls home to help out. Of course it isn’t because they are so fun to be with and so darn cute. I even got to say HI to Hannah on the phone. Congratulations to Colby Wiseman for choosing to be Baptized. His parents are Brook and Phoebe Wiseman of Tropic and Brook was able to do the honors for Colby. Kathy Griffin of Escalante and Dolly Hix-Willoughby of Tropic got together and had a “Niece’s Retreat.” They went hiking and rapelling and had a great time visiting and being together. Alert. . . The Young Women in the Bryce Valley Area are going to be coming around to your homes to sell you some Krispy Kreme Donuts for Father’s Day. If you are interested contact your local Young Women. Yummy!! A bit of late news out of Cannonville. We want to congratulate two students of SUU, who received awards in the Awards Ceremony for the College of Computing, Integration, Engineering and Technology. Angie Comp Green received the “Outstanding Math Education Student” award and Daniel Thompson received the “Outstanding Electronic Engineer Student” award. Angie is the daughter of Joey and Colleen Comp and Daniel is the so of Joe and Trish Thompson. Congratulations to you both on this great award. Carl and Mary-Miller Boyd have enjoyed having their granddaughters, Madeline and Allyson Cheshire, come for their annual visit to Tropic. The girls spent a week here seeing their friends and enjoying the beauties of the area. Each had a party with friends, hunted wildflowers with their grandfather and sewed with their grandmother. Madeline made her first quilt top. Bonus treats were Cache Mortensen’s goats in their backyard, and the two neighborhood bonfires. They revisited Bryce Canyon with friends, and made their first visit to Zion Nat’l Park on their too-soon trip back to Vegas for their flight home. Shiloh and Mykelle Richards had their beautiful little daughter blessed today. Shiloh did a beautiful job of giving his daughter a blessing. There were grandfathers, uncles, and friends in the circle. Her name is Shylie Alaska Richards and she is so cute. Lots of family and friends in attendance to support the family on this blessing. Amy Syrett and Peggy Palmer have been called to work in the Nursery. That is a big job. Congratulations ladies. SENIOR Citizen Lunch menu for June 16th, 17th, and 18th. Too bad one isn’t cropping up in our yard. Just a little thing or two. I admire the hard work and diligence that goes into the gardens. I have said it before and I will say it again, Kevin and Kay Shakesper, Jim and Louise England and now Walon and Kami Mortensen have beautiful wonderful gardens. Lots of hard work. Have great week everyone and please call or email your news to me. Thanks VS LETTER TO THE EDITOR We live in an exceptionally beautiful and blessed part of the world. We have literally millions of acres of public lands encompassing many natural wonders, climates, topography, and resources with streams, lakes, forests, deserts and alpine environments. In every one of these local environments and areas into which I have traveled my enjoyment and pride has been marred by the prodigious quantities of litter ever present. Why do some people feel they have the right to throw their trash on our land? We do not deposit our trash in their yards? Do these people not notice the beauty that surrounds them? Do they not use these lands for reasons of enjoyment or do they only have a simplistic utilitarian view? Even if they are just seeking antlers, cutting firewood, hunting or driving around drinking beer do they not notice the beauty? Is it laziness, ignorance, inconsideration, anger, disrespect or what? Obviously, those that dump their trash on our public lands are ignorant, uncaring and selfish. So I appeal to their selfish instinct of preserving the freedom to use these lands without more regulation, more restriction and more permitting. The reason we already have so many regulations and regulatory agencies is because we have not regulated ourselves. We have abused our environment, our fellow citizens, and the laws of the land, which is exactly why we have agencies such as the EPA, NLRB, EEOC, OSHA, and so many others. The government will not standby forever while we abuse the public lands. If we do not act with respect for the land and consideration of others, then the government will step in and before we know it we will not be able to simply drive into the forest without a permit. All of our actions and all of our access will be increasingly restricted and monitored and the freedoms we have so long enjoyed will be lost - forever! Please, stop littering and take out more than what you brought in. Spread the word and stand up for your freedoms and speak out when you see abuse.
