Show IN OUR TOWN FYI PANGUITCH Gary and Coleen Orton are retiring from the motel business. The New Western Motel has been in Colleen’s family since 1962, when her parents, (the Moore’s) bought it. The Moore’s also owned the Flying M restaurant and a gas station. Many a young man worked in the gas station, while growing up in Panguitch, including their son-in-law Than Cooper. Gary and Colleen have owned the Motel since 1982. The rooms on the north side were built in three stages. Gary also drove bus for the school district for many years, and it might have been as many as forty years. It will seem strange not to see Colleen behind the counter at New Western, she is a real icon. I don’t believe they ever took a vacation. Gary and Colleen congratulation and enjoy your retirement. My old really old, Home Teaching companion, Max Sevy has been named as the Manager of the new hotel out at Ruby’s Inn. I’m not sure when it will open, but he will be the Man. Max like me, worked in the Calif. Retirement System and they did not take out for Medicare so he went to work at Ruby’s to pickup his quarters to qualify. He has been at the main desk ever since. Max is a funny guy and will probably provide the entertainment at the hotel. Rand Padgett is back from Afghanistan after a year tour of duty, as a private security guard. I was talking to Rand at the Post Office, when he got the call to leave. I though he had slipped a gear, who would want to go voluntarily to the arm pit of the world. When you are a retired cop, it’s really hard to give up the excitement that job provides. Rand had better be really kind to his wife Carol; she did very well without him, even got twenty trees planted. Good to have you back big guy, in one piece. Hey I have a four wheeler let’s get out and do some riding. The Senior Citizens and the Share and Care are getting asphalt coating as I write. The weather has been great and warm enough to lay down a coat. The lines have already been drawn for parking. There will be a GRAND OPENING, with a ribbon cutting ceremony, on Monday May 18, at 1 o’clock. These two buildings will be a great addition to Panguitch and they will offer services for a lot of people in town. Come on out and thank the County Commission for all the work that went into this center and a job well done. Seniors come on out for lunch, they have great cooks and the food is delicious, Dora will fix you up with plenty of food and you won’t be in the dungeon under the court house. The Share and Care will be open for service on May 21, from 2pm to 5pm, and Sat. 23, from 11am to 2pm. There will plenty of parking for you and a lot of cheerful volunteers to help you. The Panguitch Lions Club did their semi annual clean up day. This year we had a very pleasant surprise, the students that are on their way to Nashville, for FC- Page 5 The Garfield County Insider May 14, 2009 By: Mack Oetting CLA Nationals, came out and helped us. This was a first, the students that took part were Carly Holman, Jaylee Breinholt, Haley Taylor, Natashia Barney, Austin Josie and Brendan Lee. The Lions gave them a big roar. The Lions again this year have a very busy schedule, we will have breakfasts, for the Quilt Walk, BMW motorcycle riders, Balloon Festival, 4th of July, and the Commissioners luncheon at the Garfield County Fair. The Demolition Derby will be held on Aug. 22 this year, a week after the fair. Doing the Luncheon and the Derby on the same day almost killed me last year. All of you crazies get your cars ready to rumble. All of the proceeds from our endeavors goes right back into the community. On the 29 of December the Panguitch Lions Club will be 80 years old, our charter was signed on 1929. We are always looking for people who would like to be members of the Lions and get involved in helping the community. I usually leave the sports reporting for Pat Dix, who is so good at describing an event that if you miss something it will be there in his column. Six years ago when I was driving the bus to Kanab for the 7th and 8th grade track meet I witnessed history in the making. This little skinny 7th grader won the 1600 meters race, almost lapping the field, he had broken the record by almost 30 seconds. He was such a smooth runner, you never see a young kid that runs like that, most of the time they make short choppy strides. I told his dad at that time, he would hold every distant record in the state by the time he graduates. If you haven’t guessed by now who I am talking about, his father knew what he was doing when he named him Trac. Last weekend Trac Norris went to the BYU’s invitational track meet and won the 1600 meters, 800 meters, 300 meters hurdles and finished 2nd in the 3200 meter run. He came within hundredth of a second to breaking the State records in 1600 and the 800 meter runs. Trac Noris will be attending Utah Valley University in the fall. I have always known what great advantages there are attending a small school, however one disadvantage is if you are a good athlete you play all sports, I am looking forward to seeing Trac concentrate on one sport, and see what he can do. Who knows we may be watching him on television in six years. LOCAL NEWS: A lot is happening around town; our motels, the Smokehouse (Quintan Gilbert family).
