She loves to quilt! As a young woman she learned this skill from her mother and has been doing it ever since. Although she is now legally blind and cannot do the small quilting stitch, she has been tying crib quilts. The quilts have been provided through the Humanitarian Services of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and then returned to them. While a t the Long Term Care for three months, Twila has tied twenty quilts. The staff will put the quilts on the frames and place a thumbtack on the mark of where to stitch. Twila can feel that mark and make the tie. She also plays cards using large print cards with the other residents. She also like to do her version o f word search- she picks a word like “American” and she makes as many other words out of those letters as she can. She can make 72 different words from “American.” Twila is the mother of 8 children, 44 grandchildren, 128 great-grandchildren and 13 great great grandchildren. Her family take turns caring for her when she returns to her home in Escalante this spring. We hope she keeps up the good work when she returns to Escalante. A New Liver for Sarah Anyone who has spent time in a pediatric hospital knows how sad it is when a child becomes seriously ill. Most parents would gladly trade places, if only they could, when one of their children becomes sick. Imagine being told, “Your baby has a diseased liver and will need a transplant.” For most people, transplantation is something they may have only heard a few stories about and not given it a lot of thought. Very few know what it means to get put on the transplant waiting list or the emotional rollercoaster the following months will bring. Sarah’s family didn’t know a lot about transplantation when, twentythree years ago, she was born with a rare disease of the liver that affects newborn infants. The first several months of Sarah’s life brought surgeries, hospital visits, and the wait for a liver transplant. At 14 months old, Sarah received a liver transplant. At the time, pediatric liver transplants were not being done in Utah and she had to be flown to Omaha, Nebraska, for the transplant surgery. All went well, allowing Sarah to live a fairly normal life for the next twenty years. Then suddenly one Saturday night, Sarah went weather thursday RAIN / SNOW high: 38 low: 18 to bed, complaining of a horrible headache. She awoke early the next morning and she couldn’t walk because the headache was so bad. She was rushed to the hospital where they found her blood pressure was skyrocketing. Doctors familiar with Sarah and her transplant found through further testing that Sarah’s transplanted liver had failed along with her kidney. She was placed back on the national waiting list to receive a liver and a kidney. A little over a year after being placed on the list, she was able to receive another transplant in August 2007. Sarah is now out to show the world that PHS Debate Team Takes 1st in Region and State!! She has recently completed the licensure process to become a dental assistant and is now back in her home town of Salem, Utah. She is very grateful for this third chance and for her organ donor. “Not everyone understands how important it is to make this decision and discuss it with your family before anything happens,” said Sarah. “Fortunately for me, there was a person and family who discussed this, and because of that, saved my life.” She hopes to help people make that important decision by sharing her story.
