Show The Garfield County Insider Page 4 WEDDINGS Shakespear - Porter Karrisa Shakespear and Mikai Porter have chosen February 28th, 2009 for their wedding day. You are invited to the reception that evening from 6-8 P.M. at the Tropic Ward Cultural Hall. Parents of the bride are Kevin and Kay Shakespear of Tropic and the groom’s parents are Brad and Kenda Porter of Panguitch. To Escalante City Citizens: As we near completion of the new Kazan Clinic, Evan Reeves and I want to thank all the people who contributed both time and money to the project. We’d like to thank all the medical and government institutions for their fine help. We won’t mention names in fear we might forget someone or some agency. Through the course of the project there have been happy days, temper tantrums, bad attitudes and compromises, but we made it. We are very proud of the clinic staff. Thank you to Sheri and Judy for all their help and input, and forgiving me for all the bad behavior. Thanks also to our city office staff, Vickie, Ronda and Julie. They made sure the financial matters were in order. The clinic will open the first part of March. Take time to stop in and see what a beautiful building we have. We are very proud of our city and its citizens. Published in the Garfield County Insider on February 26, March 5, 12, 2009 UPAXLP Remember, Travel Restrictions Apply to Shed Hunters Too Antler shed hunters are reminded that motorized travel restrictions apply on the Fishlake National Forest in areas where seasonal closures are in place to protect the winter range of big game. Cross-country travel for antler shed hunting is prohibited. Deer and elk naturally migrate to the lower elevations as the snow melts and vegetation begins to grow. As the seasons change, big game follow the melting snow to the high elevation for the summer. Some motorized routes in this migration pattern are restricted, or closed, from January 1 through April 15 each year, to protect wildlife as they forage on the winter range. When antler shed hunters encroach upon the winter range in motorized vehicles, deer and elk are forced to climb higher where their food source is covered by the snow pack. “In order for big game animals to have maximum body condition, they need lower stress levels and natural conditions on their range,” said Kreig Rasmussen, Richfield Ranger District wildlife biologist. “Shed hunters can help wintering animals to make it through the season in good shape, by following the restrictions in the forest’s travel plan,” adds Rasmussen. To better understand where restrictions are inplace, shed hunters are encouraged to pick up and use a Fishlake National Forest Travel Map. Maps are available at no charge from the Forest Supervisor’s Office and the Richfield Ranger District Office in Richfield, and the Ranger District Offices in Fillmore, Loa and Beaver. The maps are also available online at http:// www.fs.fed.us/r4/fishlake/. Shed hunters may be the same outdoorsmen who will hunt for trophy game in the fall. If animals are harassed by motorized use during the winter, their body condition suffers. It follows that if body condition is poor, antler development for the next year will not be maximized. It is with antlers that bucks and bulls spar for the right to be the strongest animal, and pass on his genetics to stronger, healthier offspring. Law enforcement officers from the Fishlake National Forest and the state of Utah Division of Wildlife Resources will patrol winter range access points to help motorized shed hunters understand which routes are open and closed. Please report any wildlife harassment immediately to Utah Public Safety dispatch in your area. Violations notices may be issued to those who are found on seasonally restricted routes. Violations carry a potential fine of not more than $5,000.00 and/or imprisonment for not more than six months.
