Show The Garfield County Insider December 4, 2008 Every1Counts Lighten Up For the Holidays First impressions: What they can say I dropped off thank you gifts at some offices in Salt Lake City, Utah, this week. The first building I entered two women were sitting on chairs against a wall in some sort of a greeter box. “Hi,” I said. “Hello.” “ Yes, I’m dropping off thank you gifts for x, y and z.” “We don’t take gifts here,” they said in unison. You have to go to that building over there,” pointing out through the doors. That was it. Like robots and pretentious to boot. No “good luck.” No “Happy Thanksgiving.” No, “let me show you exactly where.” Now, you might think there was nothing wrong with this short exchange. However, there were no smiles. There was also uninviting and cold body language. And, they appeared irritated; as though I interrupted a story or merely their conversation. For someone like me, it’s no big deal. I understand we all have bad days. But, for a potential customer, this short exchange could have broken a sale. Yet, when I entered another building, the federal building, there was two employees who saw me with a gift bag. Immediately, one said, “You shouldn’t have,” with a large smile. The other said, “Thank you so much for thinking of us,” and chuckled. After their comments I actually wished I had brought them gifts as well. I was then allowed to go up to the 8th floor, after a security check, and meet Senator Orrin Hatch’s secretary. “Is Senator Hatch expecting you?” she asked. “Oh no. I just wanted to drop this thank you gift off.” I then proceeded to tell her what it was. “Oh, he will just love it. Thank you so much.” Large smile, open and warm body language. Sincere. Genuine. Unpretentious. The people we have as our point ones’ represent us. They represent our company. They represent our mission statement. They can indeed make or break a sale, a relationship, a friendship. One time, years ago, I traveled 20 miles one way to drop of clothes to a drycleaner --passing many other dry cleaning establishments along the way-- solely for excellent one-on-one attention I got at the counter. They knew my name. They knew how I liked my clothes. They made me part of their company family. They gave me a gift each visit. They gave me 20% off. They made me feel welcome. It was the best experience; merely visiting a dry cleaner. It was almost therapy. Not bad, huh? When someone enters your work establishment what do your point people and other employees say about you and your company? What do their phone conversations and email correspondences say? Do they interrupt a conversation with you to answer their cell phone? Are they on their cell phone when they should be working? What does their non-verbal behavior say? What does their music and its loudness say? What does your work environment say? What does their dress say? What do their manners say? These are all questions to ask. After all, they are a reflection, good or bad, on us and our company. Therefore, if any customer isn’t getting five star treatment already --and you don’t have to be a five star company to give five star service-- work to get your establishment and people up to par. After all, wouldn’t you want to be known for customers driving well outof-their way just to experience what I did? Become a secret shopper of your organization, have someone else be one or hire one. Hopefully, in doing so you’ll find that everything’s A-okay. And, if not, lucky you for finding our now while you can still salvage customers especially during this economy when many businesses are folding. Don’t let your customers first impressions be the reason you did. For information on coaching, consulting, speaking or training contact: Cynthia Kimball Humphreys, Vice President, Every1Counts, P.O. There are so many ways to lighten up favorite recipes!” For salads and vegetable dishes, Greene recommends going heavy on fresh herbs and infused vinegars, and lighter on the oil, butter and cream. “In baked dishes,” says Greene, “try Better’n Eggs egg substitutes and AllWhites liquid egg whites in place of shell eggs to cut calories and fat.” Made from real eggs and available in a convenient easyto-pour package, Better’n Eggs and AllWhites are a fat-free, cholesterol-free and low-calorie alternative to whole eggs.
