Show Page 4 THE GARFIELD COUNTY INSIDER FEBRUARY 22,2007 It Makes Sense... By Veda Hale Probably the number one factor involved in developing a secure financial personal world is to develop a secure, committed and loving relationship with whom to share. We in our small Utah communities still have our problems, but we have going for us a few things that should help us. The number one way to assure a happy relationship is to come ourselves, from a family that has come to terms with any upsetting history, then to pick someone form the same kind of setting. Many would qualify here in our towns, more than in many parts of the country. The higher the quality of the present relationship with parents adds dividends to the couples chances. But then with those two things going for them, a couple needs to have healthy boundaries between themselves and their in-laws and parents. If those involved realize that another separate entity has been formed, one that must be treated with respect and privacy and that criticizing either part of the relationship just won't be tolerated, then chances are good. How many of us have heard a young bride say, "Oh, mother always takes my husband's side". Well, if she is saying it in disgust, then she has probably not stayed in healthy boundaries herself. She has probably complained too much outside the relationship. And none of this, "I'll go home to mama" thing, when things get rocky. Mama should have let it be known that daughter just better "make the decision she made the right one". But the families who feel free to drop in often and just hang out together, watch a special TV show each week, eat a good number of Sunday dinners together, share shopping trips, etc. seem to be the happiest. The "dropping in" is usually better done by the children than the parents. Of course, the more emotionally healthy each member is, the better. How much resilience does each have? Problems come, some people turn away, some turn toward and some turn against. Learn to be in the turn-toward group. Determination to solve the problems and the ability to change oneself and not just demand it of others is important. The environment and culture around a marriage is also important. I would think our area has many positives to offer. We certainly have a culture that values and supports long term marriages. And we offer young people a community that embraces them with many positive helps. The one piece of the environment that is also important and might not be as easy to have is a good job. If a young couple wants to stay in a small town and have as much money as their counterparts in the cities, they might have to plan some time away getting educated so they can compete for the few well-paying positions in small towns. Whatever it takes, it is worth the struggle. To be able, after fifty years together, to still feel the happy emotion of giving a sincere Valentine present to a partner, is truly a blessing.
