Show OCTOBER 19,2006 by Earl Roe wearlroe@yahoo.com • 676-2376 Our beautiful Sunday was certainly welcome after the drab, dismal Saturday; however, even this type of day is welcome when it brings the moisture we received and they are nice days to build a fire in the fireplace and relax in the recliner with a good book or watch a good football game on television. I even made my first batch of sugar cookies (with Evalyn's close supervision. This is one cooking skill that I did not learn from my mother.) My grandson, Russell Moore, was entered in a Motorcross Race at Cedar City and I was sure they would cancel it, but Russ assured me that it would be held because this kind of weather made it more fun and exciting. His parents and brothers and sister went to cheer him on and they must have done a good job because in spite of a spill when his bike slid out from under him due to the mud and a sharp turn, he still took first place and came home with a big trophy and a new set of special handlebars for his bike. (When I asked his mother how much gas that trophy would buy she just grinned.) I am pleased to report that another Panguitchite has 'seen the light' and come home to stay. Tim Marshall, son of Dr. Tom Marshall and Joyce Houston, is now a member of our Garfield Memorial Hospital staff. Tim is an RN and has been working in the Valley View Hospital in Cedar City for several years, but that Panguitch dust on his shoes finally took hold and brought him and his family back home. At the present time Tim, Natalie and children (Cody, Ashley, and Hunter) are living in the Golda Julander home until they decide whether to buy or build. Tim hopes that in his spare time he can work at training horses. (This he gets from his dad and grandpa.) This same dust is bringing another Panguitchite back home. My sister Ardith's daughter, Debra, has wanted to get back to Panguitch ever since her mother came home to stay but her husband, Tim Buehner (The Buehner Block family) had a job that made it seem unlikely that they would ever be able to make this move. Tim is the National Accountant for the Pave Stone- Corporation and as such has to travel all over the country and some foreign locations and needed to be near an airport. When Page 10 THE GARFIELD COUNTY INSIDER he learned that our airport can handle small commercial jets and his employer agreed to have him picked up here, he and Debbie immediately started looking for a home to buy. They had done this everytime they came to Panguitch and the Jim Daly home had caught their eye so they immediately got in contact with Denny Orton and made arrangements to purchase the home. When I told them that James T. (Jim) Daly was Evalyn's uncle and his wife, Francis (Calloway) Daly was my dad's niece and that dad lived in the home for a short time when he first came to Panguitch to help build the North & South Ward churches, they knew they just had to own it and next week they will be the new owners. The lot is so large that Tim contacted someone on the City Planning Committee and learned that he could build a duplex rental on the property which he plans on doing. I finally got to visit with Merl and Pauline Prince who recently returned from their three week stay in China visiting with their daughter, son-in law and grandchildren. Carl & Paula Curtis and their children, Megan and Brittany, live in Beijing where Carl works for the Conoco/Phillips Oil Combine. They enjoyed seeing the attractions of Beijing and the surrounding area; visited the Great Wall of China twice; toured the site where the Olumpic Village will be built for next year's Winter Olympics. They also enjoyed a flight to Guilin in Southern China. I wish I would have asked the reason for this flight because when I located Guilin in my Atlas, I learned that it is a long waysfromBeijing and only about 200 miles from the Viet Nam Border. (Perhaps this can be part of another peek through the Knothole.) Pauline said they sure saw a lot of beautiful country during the flight and their other travels and they really enjoyed all of their stay in China with their daughters family. Merle said the one thing he would liked to have done was take a boat trip up the big river (Huang He?) where they are building all of the large dams for flood control and irrigation purposes. (This might call for another* visit with Carl & Paula?) He also informed me of a couple of "Panguitch Connections" which I am going to have to save for the next Knothole because the hour is late and I have a couple of bits of sad news that 1 have to get in this week. JoAnn Miller called me while I was writing this and told me that Barbara (Miller) Houston had called her to let her know that her husband Art Houston (Class of 1940) passed away this morning at his home in Roy, Utah. Art was one of my closest friends from the time wefirstmoved to Panguitch until WWII sent us on our separate ways. I knew Art had been ailing for some time but I still feel sorrow to hearof the death of a classmate for eleven years and a friend for seventy five years. Art was the son of Quince and Ivy Houston and the brother of Verda (Houston) Oldham (Deceased) who lived in the family home. I also just learned of the death of another former Panguitch resident, Joe Cooper, son of Travis and EUice Cooper. Joe was a brother of Betty Talbot and had another sister, Theda. He was also our Mayor's first cousin and his closest neighbor when they were both living here, At the time of his death, Joe was living in Rosedale, Oregon. The hour is now later, my eyes are tired and I am taking more more time correcting typos than I am writing these final paragraphs.
