IS IT NEWS? By Jill Barlow Lately, all I've seen on the evening news are stories WM about movie stars. Brad and Angelina's baby, Katharine McPhee's eating disorder, Star Jones in her public TV scandal, Brittany and Kevin, Nick and Jessica, Emmy's, Oscars, who's wearing what, who's dating who, my question is, WHO CARES ?!?!?! When did entertainment gossip become okay to report on the local evening news? We know what channel to turn to if we want to fill our heads with mindless entertainment gossip drivel. When I turn on my local evening news I want to hear about reality. Stories that really matter for example, on July 4th 2006, as we were all celebrating our independence, North Korea launched several missals at the United States. A Pentagon official said there were "multiple launches from multiple locations" and added that more launches may come from North Korea in the coming days (The Washington Times 7/05/06). It seems like movie news and gossip are getting more air time than the news that North Korea is planning and executing attacks on the United States. What happened to the idea of news? How did Hollywood slowly take over and dictate what we view as relevant? to spend an extra moment listening? A receptionist to treat patients likefamily members? A housekeeper to mop thefloorjust one more time? Maybe we still believe in the promise of medicine. Maybe we understand that patients are people, not file numbers. That there are still medical miracles, even though they may be called medical outcomes. Maybe one organization can pull together with one purpose in mind. To heal That's why we still believe in the promise of medicine.
