Show JUNE 29,2006 Page 6 THE GARFIELD COUNTY INSIDER ESCALANTE NEWS ...by Chris Haycock, 435-826-4832, plateofdreams@scinteme't.net On the July 18th 2006 Escalante City Council meeting, there will be time set aside to give out information about the old city park. This will should give the town folk time to gather their thoughts, ideas and questions. Please get to this meeting. Help your Mayor and council members by listening to the facts and by giving your input. Answer to "Made ya think" two weeks ago. James Wright, an engineer at General Electric's New Haven, Connecticut, laboratory, in 1943 found that when he combined boric acid and silicone oil the resulting amalgam seemed in some ways superior to natural rubber. The puttylike material bounced, stretched, and retained its properties over a wide range of temperatures. The U.S. War Production Board was not impressed and decided that it didn't suit their needs. Now remember the WW II government contracted to develop an inexpensive synthetic rubber. How's that for fun and games? When chipmunks or other furry felons are feeding on your flowering plants, whip up a batch of this tonic. 3 tbsp. of cayenne pepper, 2 cups of hot water, 1 tbsp. of hot sauce, 1 tbsp. of ammonia, 1 tbsp. of baby shampoo Mix the cayenne pepper with the hot water in a bottle, and shake well. Let the mixture sit overnight, then pour off the liquid without disturbing the sediment at the bottom. Mix the liquid with the other ingredients in a hand-held sprayer. Keep a batch on hand, especially when tender shoots and new buds are forming, and spritz the plants as often as you can to keep them hot, hot, hot! No critter who tastes the stuff will come back for a second bite. . Until next time have a good week. And please call with your news or e-mail me.
