So far, our records only show one Garfield School District teacher with CERT disaster training. Hopefully we have some teachers who have had first aid training, and some who have had experience at putting out small fires and who have trained to so search and rescue work in the confines of damaged buildings. If any teacher has the desire to be trained in these areas and other important emergency response topics please contact myself, Bob Harman at 679-8691 or Sandrea Francisco at 679-8669. Any Garfield County resident can sign-up to take this valuable 20 hour course. It is free and includes a comprehensive manual and for a $10 donation you can obtain and emergency kit valued at over $50. We also have training for older boy scouts and 4-H youth, who can be trained to be valuable assets to family and neighbors in disaster and emergency situations. Leaders can contact either of the above persons to arrange time and place for the training. Young people are invited on their own sign-up for CERT training, we are desperate to enlist anyone from Panguitch, Hatch, Panguitch Lake or Antimony for training. These areas are especially vulnerable to the earthquake or wildfire threat and are very weak in disaster trained individuals or teams. Not to say they don't have excellent first responder volunteers but these people will be overwhelmed in the first few minutes of any disaster. Let's "all be ready for whatever comes our way. Kits, equiprnent and training are the key to self sufficiency. Take the first step, call soon. LOCAL STUDENTS ATTEND HEALTH CAREER CAMP AT SUU Mikki Thompson, Chantel Henrie and Kasey Shakespear of Bryce Valley High School and Brindy Josie, Sara Zechlin, Makell Clark, Tanielte Tebbs, Kayla Popovich, Lacey Rosser and Hailey Orton of Panguitch High School recently traveled to Cedar City, along with 75 other high school students, to attend the Southern Utah University Center for Rural Health's 8th annual Health Career Exploration Camp on June 12 - 14. The camp, designed to help high school students explore the health care industry, provided hands-on experiences and learning opportunities for those who attended. At the camp, participants were diMikki Thompson (left) and Kasey Shakespear (right) look at blood smears vided into two tracks . with microscopes as they learn about the Medical Technologist and rotated among 16 career path at the Health Camp at SUU." different workshops. Some of the workshops featured health career skills where participants learned to suture, cast arms, check blood sugar levels, take a blood pressure, intubate, give an injection, provide first-aid and more. In science labs students looked at blood smears through microscopes, extracted their own DNA, made their own teeth impressions, and made chapstick. Careers that were featured included, Respiratory Therapy, Nursing, Doctor, Physician Assistant, Occupational Therapy, Exercise Science, Veterinary, Physical Therapy, EMT, Pharmacy, Genetics, Medical Technologist, and Dentistry. The healthcare industry is among the fastest growing industries in Utah. Because there is such a need for more health care workers in rural Utah, the goal for this camp is simple. According to Carrie Torgersen, camp coordinator, "This camp is specifically designed to give students from rural areas opportunities to learn about health care careers in a hands-on way that is not always available to them. Our hope is that by introducing students to health care from rural areas, they are more inclined to go back to a rural area to work after their education is finished." The Health Career Exploration Camp will be held again next year at Southern Utah University in June.
