"Today's new jobs numbers demonstrate once again how the pro-growth tax policies of the Bush administration have contributed to the strong, rapidly growing economy," said Senator Bennett. "Five million new jobs since August 2003, historically low unemployment and high GDP are a few important examples of why the Congress must continue to implement these policies responsible for the impressive economic recovery we've experienced." The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today that 211,000 new jobs were created last month. Additional economic highlights include: • As part of the nearly 5.2 million new jobs created since August 2003, employers added more than 2 million jobs in the last year. • The current unemployment rate is 4.7 percent, at or below the averages of the last four decades. • In just two-and-a-half years, real Gross Domestic Product has grown by 9.9 percent, and more than 3.5 percent in each of the past two years - faster than Japan or any major industrialized nation in Europe. • Consumer confidence reached a near four-year high in March. • Home ownership has reached all-time high - more than two-thirds of Americans own their homes today, which is more than any time in history. "While today's kids can receive e-mail through their cell phones or use a CD-ROM to doe their homework, many don't know the basics of saving and money management," said Garrett Cottam, Branch Manager. "Studies show that people who learn to save early in life usually make smarter financial decisions later. National Teach Children to Save Day starts kids off on the right path to saving for their future." Sponsored by the American Bankers Association Education Foundation (ABAEF), National Teach Children to Save Day is a day in April when bankers make presentations in schools across the country to students in kindergarten through 12th grade. On April 21st and April 28th State Bank of Southern Utah employees teach children about money and savings, covering topics such as budgeting, the difference between needs and wants, why it's important to save for emergencies and how interest makes money grow. Students will have an opportunity to apply concepts and practices through games and other hands-on activities. "Bankers are experts at saving and investing, so it's a naturalfitfor them to visit classrooms to teach students how their money can grow/' said Donald G Ogilvie, executive vice president of the American Bankers Association; "Students who become smart savers today can become smart investors and money managers tomorrow." Classroom materials will be used on NTCSD to support curriculum standards established by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM), the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) and the Family and Consumer Sciences (FACS). The Bryce Valley Branch of State Bank of Southern Utah would like to thank the local schools for allowing the Bank to have a small role in the education of tomorrows leaders. Employees will also be visiting the Escaiante High School and Escaiante Elementary later in May.
