The welding contest consisted of a written test, an Oxy/Acetylene cutting task, and a traditional AWS D.I.I, weld bend test. Winner Tyson Kirk received a $100 gift certificate from Four Corners Welding. Second place finisher Jarred Nelson of Monument Valley High School won a $50 Four Corners Welding gift certificate. Shilo Stanley and Evan Black, both of San Juan High School, finished in third and fourth places respectively, and received tool sets donated by Napa Auto Parts of Blanding. Torrence Stash and Jay son McDaniel also represented San Juan High School in the contest. Tyson Kirk is the son of Ronald and Katy Kirk of Blanding. He is active in football, basketball, and baseball. Shown above (L-R) are SJHS welding teacher Chase Alder, Tyson Kirk, and Powers Whiskers of MVHS. Courtesy photo With only one semester of welding class under his belt, TVson shows a great deal of potential, and wants to continue learning about welding. "I'm very proud of how all my students performed in the contest," said SJH welding teacher Chase Alder. "There is a real need for skilled welders in the job market, and technical programs such as welding are an important part of the educational system, because^ they allow students to learn valuable real-world skills that directly translate to marketability and job potential in the future. I hope that contests and events such as this will bring increased recognition to the importance of vocational education."
