Marshall added another goal in the 61st minute for BYU, which put the Cougars on top 3-0 and closed the door on any chance of a WSU comeback. BYU wasn't finished offensively; they continued applying pressure to WSU's defensive line and controlling the ball for the remainder of the second half. BYU midfielders Kassidy Shumway and Auna J. Doria were able to get in on the action, scoring in the 69th and 75th minutes. WSU continued to battle and was able to break through BYU's stingy defense in the 83rd minute when freshman midfielder Alyssa Amano blasted a shot from 20 yards out past BYU goalkeeper Katherine Snyder. WSU Head Coach Tim Crompton said he saw flashes of good play by the team in thefirsthalf but was let down by the team's performance in the second half. "I am disappointed that we didn't play better in the second half, but I thought we played decent in the first half," Crompton said. "I think we are capable of playing far better than that. In the first half we had some moments and I always want to take out of these games things that we did well." Crompton said earlier in the week that BYU is an assertive and quick team and the players noticed that fast tempo, but didn't adjust to it during the game. "They are a fast and aggressive team," said Felicia Sortor, WSU forward. "I think we could have kept up with them but we didn't have a great game." BYU outshot the Wildcats 23-2 over the course of the game. WSU goalkeeper Ryann Waldman was kept busy all night and finished the game with 12 saves. The beginning of the game was delayed for an hour due to rain and a lightning storm that tested the players' focus. WSU forward Jessie Baddley said the experience will benefit the team in the future. "I think it just takes more mental toughness, but I think it is good to have something like that in the first of the season so you can be prepared and practice for those types of things. It's definitely a challenge to overcome." Crompton said playing talented opponents like BYU will prepare WSU for their conference schedule. "We always try to play teams in non-conference that are good," Crqmpton said. "I don't think you can get better unless you play good teams." With the loss, WSU now falls to 0-2-0. The team's next game is on Friday, Sept. 3, against St. Mary's College at home.
