"The class covers just the basic fundamentals of ice skating and is more or less like a basic skills course," said Amanda Kovar, Weber County Ice Sheet skating coach. "It's not just geared toward figure skating; it's really geared toward the regular skater." Amanda's husband, Karel, is also an ice-skating coach for the Ice Sheet and will be teaching an ice-skating class at the rink Mondays from 10 a.m. to 11:50 a.m. spring semester. The Kovars are both skating directors, choreographers and coaches. Both have competed in major competitions, received awards, and skated with Disney On Ice, where they met each other and performed in the 2002 Alexis Merrill (left) skates near her mom, Marli Merril (right), at the Ice Sheet. Winter Olympic ceremonies. Karel and Amanda now teach WSU students how to stay upright on thin blades, all while the students move and stop on the ice. "It teaches all the different elements of stops and edge quality and forward and backward crossovers and control," Amanda said. Karel said he enjoys teaching the ice-skating class and has several students who skate well by the time the semester is over. "I think Karel does a great job," Amanda said. "He keeps the students' enthusiasm in key." Amanda said Karel takes a great interest in the students and helps in any way possible. "He'll, at different periods throughout the semester, pull [students] in and show them video of hockey and figure skating," Amandasaid, "and explain to them through slow motion what certain edge skills are and qualities." To ensure WSU students put in practice time on the ice, each student is given a free skating pass with 10 tickets. At the end of the semester, students have to bring in the pass to show they put in their practice time. "They're also required to come to an event here," Amanda said. "Any event, like maybe a game of hockey or a figure-skating event or speed skating or whatever." This is lenient compared to the "Learn to Skate" program also held at the Ice sheet, a public program for students of all ages but mostly younger than WSU students. According to Karel, Learn to Skate students have class about once a week for six weeks and have to pass a test before they can move on to a higher level. "These students have to put in more time on the ice, about four days a week," Karel said. "It's a lot harder than the iceskating class we teach." Though an ice-skating class may not be as difficult as a program like Learn to Skate, the memories and skills learned may carry on for a lifetime. At 54 years old, Leeanne Whitaker, Salt Lake City resident, said she skates for fun at the Bountiful Recreational Center and occasionally the Ice Sheet and said she is grateful she learned basic fundamentals when she was younger. "When I was little, my best friend asked me to learn to skate with her," Whitaker said. "The same friend stopped taking the classes, but 1 didn't, and when we were older we both liked this guy and he wanted to go ice skating. We both went with him. My friend fell a few times, and I didn't. Now the guy's my husband, so you never know when ice skating can come in handy." You can leave a message for reporter David Fairehild by calling 626-7/05.
