Show Chris Drew / HEX Writer Beauty is everywhere. When we capture beauty through any given medium, some can see the beauty for what it is and call it art. Others could look upon that same piece and either completely disagree or see something else that wasn't previously noticed by others. Since August 2012, the monthly event called Sketch Cabaret in Salt Lake City has blossomed from a small gathering of artists into a massive monthly happening. It features over 20 models on four stages and artists of various mediums from all over the world. They gather for five hours to share and learn from each other. Two years ago, Veronica Harper's employer, E.A. Games, asked her to move to Salt Lake City, Utah from San Diego, California. During her first year in Utah, she wanted to become familiar with Utah's artistic scene and she found that, though art was deeply rooted there, the artistic community was not thriving as a whole. "There were [and are] so many artists here who seemed to be just scattered; there's no sense of community," Harper said. According to Harper, in April last year she began inviting models, musicians, and other artists to her house for this monthly affair. "Every month the event has grown bigger, so I knew there was a widespread desire for such an event," Harper said. "There is a lot of passion for the arts here, so people keep coming back for more." James Christian Morris, a highly experienced model from England who currently resides and works in Utah, has found that the chemistry feeding this event goes beyond any one individual's passions, that it's a part of the human experience. "You can literally feel the vibration, almost like a religious experience, where we are all priests and priestesses because we are creating our own experiences," Morris said. "It's scary and exciting to give yourself to others—you never know what to expect, you just have to accept yourself and your role in the dialogue." According to Morris, even though perceptions may differ at times at monthly Sketch Cabaret events, ideas are being cultivated through different poses, lights, and sounds, creating an interactive experience that takes everyone who attends in a new direction and away from the "humdrum of life." It provides an atmosphere for individuals within society to network, learn and grow together. HEX/VI |
