Show A NON-RELIGIOUS EASTER Adrianne Ballif / HEX Writer Christmas, Hanukkah, Passover, and Easter all have two things in common: They experience wide spread popularity and they are all most commonly known as religious holidays. Easter is one of the oldest holidays among Christian religions, but how Christian is the holiday in reality? Many people celebrate Easter in memory of Jesus Christ. It's very clear that church attendance is at a significant high that weekend. But what about the other parts of Easter? The bunny, the candy, the egg hunts? That isn't Christian, it's not even religious. This Easter, an event called The Festival of Colors, which takes place at the Hare Krishna Temple in Spanish Fork, falls on Easter weekend. Countless people plan on attending the festival on Easter Sunday, so I guess that means they'll be celebrating a little of two religions that day. Diversity at it's finest. I myself am an Agnostic Atheist, but I spend the holiday in almost the same way as everybody else in Utah County. I spend the day with family and friends, eating candy and delicious food, occasionally doing Easter egg hunts. Easter Sunday for me isn't about going to church. It's about welcoming in the springtime and enjoying the beautiful new colors outside. There are a lot of debates and confliction in the world about non-Christians celebrating Christian holidays. I always come to the same conclusion: It's going to be celebrated worldwide either way, so we may as well have a good time. Let everybody celebrate in their own way. HEX /VII |
