KSL and Craigslist are full of apartment ads, and many of these contracts are being sold by students preparing for LDS missions. In the past, females had to be at least 21-years-old to serve a mission, but the age has recently changed to 19. With the age change has come an influx in female missionaries, which has also caused issues for the student housing situation in Utah Valley. Renee Gavaldon was waiting until she turned 21 to serve a mission, but when the age was changed to 19, she no longer had 66 I had no idea it would be so hard to sell my contract. It makes sense though, with all these girls leaving. RENEE GAVALDON UVU Student UU to wait. She turned 20 one month ago and leaves for her mission on March 13. According to Gavaldon, the only trouble she has had with preparing to leave has been selling her housing contract. "I had no idea it would be so hard to sell my contract," Gavaldon said. "It makes sense though, with all these girls leaving." Gavaldon received her mission assignment in late November and said she has been trying to sell her year-long contract ever since. She has an ad on both KSL and Craigslist and has posted an announcement on her church's bulletin board, but ahe has yet to find a buyer. "When I go on KSL to update my ad, I see so many other housing ads. It's so discouraging because I feel like no one will want to look at my ad when there are so many others to look at," Gavaldon said. On the other end of the spectrum, student Amy Charles considers herself lucky that she was able to buy a housing contract so fast. When Charles made a last minute decision to move from Rexburg, ID to Provo she was worried she wouldn't be able to find a housing contract available in an apartment complex she would enjoy. "I was nervous I would be stuck with buying a contract for a ghetto complex because I moved here after the semester already started," Charles said. But to Charles' pleasant surprise, KSL was "full of available contracts for really nice apartments." Charles agrees with Gavaldon that the reason why so many contracts are for sale is because of the increase of female missionaries. Alpha Sigma Alpha strives to create women of poise and purpose through community involvement By Holly Matthews Life Writer alwayssunnyholly@gmail.com All but three Presidents of the United States of America have been members of Greek organizations. Interestingly Freida Riley, the teacher for the "Rocket Boys" from the film, October Sky, was an Alpha Sigma Alpha. The wom- an who invented the "Green Bean Casserole", D. Bates Reilly, was also a proud woman of Crimson and Gold. The women of Greek organizations aspire to make a difference in the world around them in similar ways. Alpha Sigma Alpha is an organization on campus that strives to create women of poise and purpose through helping the women reach their full potential. As an organization, the women also help the community by donating time and money to non-profit and charity organization across the state. Recently the women of Theta Pi went to a marathon put on by "Girls on the Run", which helps girls from all ages build self esteem through athletic endeavors. "It was so much fun to see all the little girls running, not to mention being with my sisters," said a Theta Pi woman They also make many efforts in academics and university relations, which makes this sorority stand apart from other clubs at UVU. Every member must maintain a certain GPA, and it is highly encouraged to attend Student Government activities and sporting events as part of their goal to increase school spirit. The Women of Alpha Sigma Alpha are striving to make their mark and encourage others to do the same. They spend time trying to better the campus and themselves. "Being in a sorority has changed my life. It is hands down the best decision I've ever made," said one of the members. "I have never had more friends, more fun or more leadership opportunities in my life. I love the sisterhood we share and the involvement we have within the campus and community." According to the members, being Greek is more than belonging to a club. Being Greek has the potential to improve the college experience. If you are interested in being an Alpha Sigma Alpha, please contact them on their Facebook page "Asa Rush". HOLLY MATTHEWS/UVU REVIEW The women of Alpha Sigma Alpha encourage school spirit.
