Show WHO WE ARE LETTER FROM THE EDITOR LIFE IS ABOUT EXPERIENCES, RIGHT? The V magazine is a new project being funded by Utah Valley University. If so, it could be argued that the greatest experiences come from experiments. That's a loaded word, I know, but it's the best one I can think of and I like the assonance. I can assure you I'm using it differently than street-walkers of Berkeley in the 1960's. I simply mean trying new things—dabbling in new territory, turning over new leaves and dipping your toes in new puddles. Paul Simon once sung, "Wash your hands in dreams and lightning, cut your hair and whatever is frightening." What a lovely thought. I couldn't agree more. As I looked through the pieces in this year's high school art show (featured on the front cover and pages 6 and 7), I was fascinated by their experimentation. I saw students wading through different mediums, styles and subjects groping (in the most beautiful way) for their voice. I recalled my time in high school and remembered how difficult that process was. I reflected on who I've become through the years. The bottom line is this: I'm the sum total of everyone and everything I've ever tried to be—I am my experiments. These pages are filled with new ideas and new opportunities. They range from punk rock shows to literary groups and from French cafes to Salsa dance clubs. There are opportunities to grow and expand everywhere, and I hope these pages will help in that process. The purpose of these pages is to highlight the vibrancy of the arts in the valley, affirm the attractiveness of the community, expand the scope of its members and provide a forum of discussion for the unique diversity of thought within this mountain home. The publication is about people—how we interact with each other and how we interact with the valley. By highlighting individuals in the community, focusing on their unique talents and contributions, we hope to knit the community more tightly together. The primary goal of this publication is to become an adhesive—binding the people in the valley to the things that make it beautiful. To make this bond possible, we strongly encourage community involvement and submissions. Opinions, observations, short stories, sketches, poetry, paintings and photographs are all welcome. This publication is as much yours as it is ours. IF YOU COULD GO BACK TO HIGH SCHOOL, WHAT WOULD YOU DO DIFFERENTLY? I WOULD KEEP MY MOUTH SHUT MORE! AND WOULD HAVE HIT MY GROWTH SPURT SOONER.
