Show Annual sing-along at Provo church a I. By DEVEN LEIGH ELLIS Asst. Life Editor Monday, Dec. 5 at 7 p.m., UVU's Director of Choral Studies Dr. Reed Criddle will direct over 100 participating students at the annual community Christmas SingAlong of Handel's Messiah. The long-standing tradition used to take place at the Provo Tabernacle, but since a fire gutted the building's interior on Dec. 17, 2010, cosponsors Provo Arts Council and Provo Community United Church of Christ have decided to hold the event in the church's sanctuary. The free event is open to the public and will feature popular highlights from Handel's Messiah, culminating from the efforts of UVU's Masterworks Chorale, orchestra members and over 10 soloists. The distinguishing feature of the event, though, is the invitation to the community to sing along with their favorite arrangements. "It's not a normal concert where you just sit and take in the music," Criddle said. Printed scores to the concert will be distributed at the door. The event is expected to last approximately two hours. As opposed to more formal Christmas shows, the appeal of the Sing-Along lies in its informality. "What makes this [concert] different is all the student soloists and its approach from many different angles. It's not supposed to be a polished musical experience," Criddle said. Even if audience members harbor an aversion to singing in public, Criddle promises the Sing-Along to be an enjoyable affair. "The wonderful thing about UVU December concerts is that students have been prepping all semester. It's the culmination of all their hard work and creativity." The night was unique as it was the first time two separate publications of "Warp & Weave" were available. In addition to the traditional semester issue, the staff also published a Retrospective issue featuring the work previously published in past issues. During the launch party, students read work not only from the Aspiring writers receive help at English Club By KELLY CANNON Life Editor Standing in front of an audience of peers and a few faculty members, students read excerpts of their own creative writing. Ranging from poetry to creative nonfiction, the tone of the pieces changed from cringing humor to somber realism. In the second Open Mic Night hosted by the English Club, students had the chance to present their work to a receptive audience. While the newly established club meets every Tuesday, the last Tuesday of every month is Open Mic Night. The night usually opens with a member of the faculty reading some of their own creative work. On Nov. 29, Dr. Karin Anderson read pieces of creative non-fiction, a genre based on telling true stories from one's own life. Anderson's work focused on her own son, as well as the experience she had when YOUNG FAMILY DENTAL • Serving Utah Families for 40 Years! • Wisdom Teeth, Root Canals • General Dentistry, IV Sedation • Open Saturdays, Emergencies $49 for Exam, Xrays, & Cleaning Not valid with any other discount or offer. While Anderson's work is prose, the pieces she read had a lyric quality to them. After Anderson, students got up to read their own work. One student, senior Sterling Gray, also presented his own creative non-fiction work, reading two stories from a series entitled, "Going with the Flow: Being a Confused Boy in the Midst of Menstruating Women." The audience both laughed and cringed in delight as Gray related his memories of discovering what tampons were and having a conversation about Kodex commercials with his first girlfriend. "I tend to see myself as a storyteller," Gray said. "I approach it as if I were standing in front of people." While Open Mic Night is the most popular event, the other meetings focus on helping students develop their writing. "The purpose of the club is to provide an op- portunity to share work and improve their writing," said Ammon Medina, the president of the English club. "It's a chance to read your work to people and get feedback from those who are genuinely interested in helping you." Most of the members of the club have had their work published in either "Touchstones" or "Warp & Weave," the two creative writing journals produced by students in the English department. Medina encourages students interested in being published in these journals to come workshop their pieces before submission. "It's a great tool to get into 'Touchstones' or `Warp & Weave,'" Medina said. "We have people who have gotten into 'Touchstones' or 'Warp & Weave' so why not use them?" The club meets every Tuesday in the SC building. For more information, visit uvuenglishclub.com or email Ammon Medina at bfgammon@gmail.com Write for Life! Call's work has had several pieces published in "Warp & Weave" and "Eric was republished in the Retrospective issue. "It's always thrilling for a writer to see their work in print," Call said. According to Call, her speculative fiction writing is heavily influenced by visions of the future, both post-apocalyptic and dystopian. "I like surreal and dark stories," Call said. Other students who read their work included Joan Albright with "Damascus" and Casey Winters with "Number M." Both won prizes for their submissions, Albright winning second place and Winters winning third. Lyndi Bone also received an award for the best art submission entitled "Gravity." At the end of the night, Darek Purcell, Editor-in-Chief of "Warp & Weave" looked relieved. "I'm really happy with how it turned out," Purcell said. "It had a rocky start but it came together quickly and well." Copies of the latest issue of "Warp & Weave" and the Retrospective can be purchased in LA 114 or in the bookstore for $5 each.
